Section Control on the A 2 at Aspang to be lifted by decree

Por FactBox Admin

Section Control auf der A 2 bei Aspang wird per Verordnung aufgehoben

Section control speed monitoring on the Aspang–Grimmenstein section of the A 2 Süd Autobahn is being abolished. The Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has issued a regulation to this effect, which was published on October 7, 2026, in the Federal Law Gazette for the Republic of Austria, Part II, under number BGBl. II No. 292/2026. This marks the end of the measurement stretch introduced in 2020 on this motorway section.

What the regulation mandates

The only paragraph of the new regulation, § 1, mandates the repeal of the previous legal basis:

  • The regulation of the Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology regarding section control speed monitoring 2020 on the Aspang–Grimmenstein section of the A 2 Süd Autobahn, BGBl. II No. 210/2020, is repealed.
  • The official short title of the new regulation is Section Control-Messstrecken-Aufhebungsverordnung Aspang-Grimmenstein.
  • The legal basis is § 98a Para. 1 StVO 1960, BGBl. No. 159/1960, most recently amended by BGBl. I No. 62/2026.
  • The regulation consists of a single paragraph and contains no transitional or entry-into-force provisions.

The legal instrument is signed with the name Hanke. The document was officially signed by the Federal Chancellery on October 7, 2026, at 10:57 AM.

Change of jurisdiction between ministries

Notably, there is a change in the issuing authority. The now-repealed regulation from 2020 originated from the Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology. The repeal itself is now issued by the Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, the department that has taken over transport affairs. Both regulations are based on the same authorization under § 98a Para. 1 StVO 1960.

Classification within Section Control practice 2026

The repeal is part of a series of regulations with which section control speed monitoring is being reorganized in 2026. For example, the following were newly issued in the Federal Law Gazette:

  • BGBl. II No. 276/2026 dated September 16, 2026, for the Prater junction area of the A 4 Ost Autobahn (Phase 4).
  • BGBl. II No. 278/2026 dated September 16, 2026, for the Linz junction – Franzosenhausweg exit area of the A 7 Mühlkreis Autobahn (Phase 2).

These regulations are also based on § 98a Para. 1 StVO 1960 in the version BGBl. I No. 62/2026 and bear the signature of Hanke.

What this means for drivers

Only the 2020 surveillance ordinance for the measurement section Aspang–Grimmenstein is being repealed. Consequently, the average driving speed on this section of the A 2 Süd Autobahn will no longer be measured using an imaging technical device. For drivers on the Süd Autobahn between Aspang and Grimmenstein, this means the removal of the control via a measurement section as provided for by the repealed regulations.

The repeal is officially announced via publication in the Federal Law Gazette. The decision comes at a time when the federal government is reviewing Section Control locations nationwide and repealing individual measurement sections, while other sections—for example on the A 4 Ost Autobahn and the A 7 Mühlkreis Autobahn—are being newly ordained. For traffic on the Süd Autobahn, this represents a noticeable change in surveillance practice on a heavily trafficked stretch between Lower Austria and Styria.
