Slovenia adds Triglav Day and rewrites Prekmurje and Primorska holiday wording
Por FactBox Admin

Slovenia has added 7 August, Triglav Day, to its list of state holidays and reworded two existing entries covering Prekmurje and Primorska, under an amendment published in Uradni list Republike Slovenije no. 1567/2026 of 2 October 2026. The law, ZPDPD-I, was promulgated by President Nataša Pirc Musar on 2 October 2026 and takes effect on the fifteenth day after publication. It changes the national holiday calendar that applies to all citizens and employers.
The amendment (EPA 137-X) modifies the Zakon o praznikih in dela prostih dnevih v Republiki Sloveniji (Uradni list RS, št. 112/05 – uradno prečiščeno besedilo, 52/10, 40/12 – ZUJF, 19/15, 83/16, 92/20, 95/24, 24/25 in 12/26). The adopted text is dated Ljubljana, 24 September 2026, reference Št. 001-07/26-3/15, and was signed by Zoran Stevanović, president of the Državni zbor (National Assembly). The file also carries the identifiers EVA 2026-1211-0137 and EDA 2026-5022924000-0080.
A new entry for 7 August
Article 1 inserts a new seventh indent after the sixth indent of Article 1(1), reading “– 7. avgust, dan Triglava” (7 August, Triglav Day). The former seventh to fourteenth indents become the eighth to fifteenth, so the statutory list grows from fourteen to fifteen entries.
Triglav Day is a state holiday but not a work-free day: the amended Article 1(2) keeps it inside the group of holidays on which work is not prohibited.
Prekmurje and Primorska reworded
The same article rewrites two existing entries of the holiday list:
- In the former seventh indent, now the eighth, the words “priključitev Prekmurja in” are deleted, leaving the 17 August holiday as “združitev prekmurskih Slovencev z matičnim narodom” (union of Prekmurje Slovenes with the mother nation).
- In the former eighth indent, now the ninth, the word “priključitev” is replaced by “vrnitev”, so the 15 September holiday reads “vrnitev Primorske k matični domovini” (return of the Primorska region to the mother country).
The change reverses part of an earlier amendment, ZPDPD-H, published in Uradni list RS no. 12/2026 of 17 February 2026, which had inserted “priključitev Prekmurja” into the 17 August entry and into the second paragraph of the same article.
Holidays that are not work-free days
Article 1(2) lists the state holidays that are not days off work:
- dan Primoža Trubarja (Primož Trubar Day)
- dan Triglava (Triglav Day)
- združitev prekmurskih Slovencev z matičnim narodom
- vrnitev Primorske k matični domovini
- dan slovenskega športa (Slovenian Sport Day)
- dan suverenosti (Sovereignty Day)
- dan znanosti (Science Day)
- dan Rudolfa Maistra (Rudolf Maister Day)
All other state holidays listed in Article 1(1) remain work-free days.
Entry into force
Under Article 2, the law enters into force on the fifteenth day after publication in Uradni list Republike Slovenije, which places its application from 17 October 2026.
The number of work-free public holidays is unchanged, since Triglav Day joins the calendar as a working holiday, but the rewording of the Prekmurje and Primorska entries alters the official names that employers, payroll systems, collective agreements and official calendars must use from mid-October.
