Slovenia adds 7 August, Triglav Day, to its official holiday list

Slovenia has a new national holiday: 7 August, Triglav Day, added to the list of holidays of the Republic of Slovenia by the ZPDPD-I amendment published in the Uradni list Republike Slovenije no. 1567/2026 of 2 October 2026. The law, adopted by the Državni zbor Republike Slovenije and promulgated by presidential decree the same day, also rewrites the names of the holidays commemorating Prekmurje and Primorska. The new holiday is not a work-free day.

The text is the Zakon o spremembah in dopolnitvah Zakona o praznikih in dela prostih dnevih v Republiki Sloveniji (ZPDPD-I), which amends the Zakon o praznikih in dela prostih dnevih v Republiki Sloveniji (Uradni list RS, št. 112/05 – uradno prečiščeno besedilo, 52/10, 40/12 – ZUJF, 19/15, 83/16, 92/20, 95/24, 24/25 in 12/26). The National Assembly adopted it in Ljubljana on 24 September 2026 under file no. 001-07/26-3/15, with the legislative references EPA 137-X, EVA 2026-1211-0137 and EDA 2026-5022924000-0080; the act is signed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Zoran Stevanović.

It was promulgated by the Ukaz o razglasitvi Zakona o spremembah in dopolnitvah Zakona o praznikih in dela prostih dnevih v Republiki Sloveniji (ZPDPD-I) št. 003-02-1/2026-199, issued by the President of the Republic, Nataša Pirc Musar, on 2 October 2026. The publication carries the document number 2026-01-2227 and appears in section I of the Official Gazette, issued by the Služba Vlade Republike Slovenije za zakonodajo (ISSN 1580-3074, volume XXXVI).

What the amendment changes

Article 1 of the amendment inserts a new seventh indent into Article 1(1) of the Holidays Act, reading “7. avgust, dan Triglava”. It also edits the two indents that follow:

  • The former seventh indent, now the eighth, loses the words “priključitev Prekmurja in”, leaving the holiday named “združitev prekmurskih Slovencev z matičnim narodom”.
  • The former eighth indent, now the ninth, replaces the word “priključitev” with “vrnitev”, so the holiday reads “vrnitev Primorske k matični domovini”.
  • The former ninth to fourteenth indents are renumbered as the tenth to fifteenth.

Not a work-free day

The second paragraph of Article 1 is rewritten to list the holidays that are not work-free days. Alongside the new Triglav Day, the list keeps dan Primoža Trubarja, združitev prekmurskih Slovencev z matičnim narodom, vrnitev Primorske k matični domovini, dan slovenskega športa, dan suverenosti, dan znanosti and dan Rudolfa Maistra.

Because 7 August is not a non-working day, the amendment does not alter the working calendar, the number of days off work or the obligations of employers. The change is one of designation and symbolism rather than of labour law.

Entry into force

Under the final provision (Article 2), the law enters into force on the fifteenth day after publication in the Uradni list Republike Slovenije, that is, on 17 October 2026. From that date the amended Article 1 of the Holidays Act applies in its new wording.

The change gives state recognition to Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak and a national symbol, without granting workers an extra day off. It also settles the wording of two commemorations, replacing the language of annexation with that of union and return for Prekmurje and Primorska.
