Road rules suspended across four shires for two cycling championships
Por FactBox Admin

A delegate of the Minister for Transport has suspended the Road Traffic Act and parts of the Road Traffic Code 2000 on dozens of roads across four Western Australian shires so that two cycling events can be staged. The approval was signed by Acting Inspector Chris Wride under section 139 of the Road Traffic (Administration) Act 2008 and published in the Government Gazette of Western Australia No. 128 of 9 October 2026, notice PO401.
The notice covers the Gravel World Championships, run by members and entrants of Cycling Eventures Pty Ltd, and the Peel Classic Cycling Race, run by members and entrants of the Peel District Cycling Club Inc. The delegate states that the consent of the local authorities had been obtained and that racing is to be confined to the left of the carriageway in each case.
Gravel World Championships: two days across three shires
The larger of the two approvals covers the Gravel World Championships on 10 and 11 October 2026, between 10:00 and 16:00 on each day, in the Shires of Nannup, Donnybrook-Balingup and Bridgetown-Greenbushes. Thirty-three road entries are listed, with Ridge Road named twice:
- Grange Road, Nannup-Balingup Road, Agg Road, Killarney Road, Ridge Road, Boundary Road, Cundinup-Dudinyillup Road, Hill Road, Mader Road, Maidement Road, Ridge Road, Dorant Road, Radiata Road, Sabiniana Road, Coulteri Road, Pinea Road, Lewana Road, Cedar Road, Muricata Road, Contorta Road, Pitt Road, Ellis Creek Road, Spur Road, Crevasse Road, Arete Road, Range Road, Glacier Road, Butte Road, Dunnet Road, Brockman Highway, Folly Formation Road, Lindsay Road and Uranium Road.
Peel Classic: stop signs waived under traffic control
The Peel Classic Cycling Race is approved for 1 November 2026, between 09:00 and 13:00, in the Shire of Boddington. Racing is confined to the left of the carriageway on:
- Bannister-Marradong Road
- Lower Hotham Road
- Harvey-Quindanning Road
- Pinjarra-Williams Road
For this event the suspension also reaches Regulation 50 of the Road Traffic Code 2000, which prohibits contravening a stop sign or white stop line, but only where opposing traffic at those locations is stopped and held by accredited traffic controllers with stop/slow bats.
What is waived, and what still applies
Both approvals suspend Regulation 130(2) of the Road Traffic Code 2000, allowing cyclists to ride in a peloton and to overtake each other more than two or three abreast.
- Cyclists must keep left of the centre of the road unless overtaking a slow-moving vehicle where it is safe to do so.
- Participants and officials must comply with all other provisions of the WA Road Traffic Act and Regulations, including posted speed limits.
- All participants must wear approved head protection at all times.
- For the Peel Classic, the official start and sprint finish may also use the stop-sign exemption where traffic controllers are holding opposing traffic.
The suspensions put ordinary traffic on rural roads in four shires under race conditions across three event days, and the notice places the terms of use — peloton riding, stop-sign waivers and traffic-controller supervision — on the public record. Residents and road users in Nannup, Donnybrook-Balingup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Boddington should expect rolling race traffic during the stated hours.
