Eplontersen reimbursed for hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis

Por FactBox Admin

WAINZUA (eplontersen), a treatment for hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis, is now reimbursable for social security beneficiaries. The decision comes from the Ministry of Health, Families, Autonomy and People with Disabilities, which published in the Official Journal of the French Republic (JORF No. 0204 of September 2, 2026) a decree for inclusion on the list of reimbursable specialties, accompanied by two notices fixing the price and the reimbursement rate.

The drug, developed by ASTRAZENECA laboratories, is listed for the treatment of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) in adult patients with stage 1 or stage 2 polyneuropathy. This represents a major new therapeutic option for a rare and disabling disease.

A registration in two regulatory parts

The reimbursement registration is based on the decree of August 31, 2026 (NOR SFHS2621573A), which modifies the list of pharmaceutical specialties reimbursable to social security beneficiaries as provided for in Article L. 162-17 of the Social Security Code. A second decree of the same day (NOR SFHS2621574A) simultaneously lists the specialty on the list of medicines approved for use by local authorities and various public services.

In both cases, the only therapeutic indication granting eligibility for coverage is strictly defined:

  • treatment of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR);
  • in adult patients with stage 1 or stage 2 polyneuropathy.

Price and reimbursement rate

The price of the treatment is set by the notice relating to prices (NOR SFHS2621575V), issued in application of the agreement between the Economic Committee for Health Products and the company ASTRAZENECA. The amounts retained are as follows:

  • PFHT (manufacturer price excluding tax): €19,528.90;
  • PPTTC (public price including all taxes): €20,071.89.

The insured person’s reimbursement rate is set at 70% by the notice relating to the decision of the National Union of Health Insurance Funds (NOR SFHS2621576V), by decision of the Director General of the UNCAM dated August 27, 2026.

Characteristics of the specialty

The registered specialty is identified by the CIP code 34009 303 065 3 6. It is WAINZUA 45 mg (eplontersen), solution for injection in a pre-filled pen, presented in a 0.8 ml (56 mg/ml) pre-filled glass syringe within a pre-filled pen, packaged in a box of 1 (B/1).

Eplontersen is an antisense oligonucleotide that targets the production of transthyretin, the protein whose abnormal accumulation causes the disease. Its subcutaneous administration makes it a maintenance treatment intended to slow the progression of polyneuropathy.

Scope of the decision

These decrees and notices take effect from the fourth day following their publication in the Official Journal, starting from September 6, 2026. For patients suffering from hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis, this listing provides reimbursed access to an innovative therapy, both in outpatient and hospital settings, and constitutes a significant advancement in the management of a rare disease previously characterized by limited therapeutic options.
