O Convento do Bon Xesús da Limia, declarado ben de interese cultural

The Council of the Xunta de Galicia has declared the Convent of Bon Xesús da Limia, located in Trandeiras, in the municipality of Xinzo de Limia (Ourense), as an asset of cultural interest, under the category of monument. The decision was adopted at the meeting on October 19, 2026, and is published in DOG no. 211 of November 4 via Decree 129/2026, signed by president Alfonso Rueda Valenzuela and the counselor of Culture, Language and Youth, José Carlos López Campos.

The text, processed by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, grants the property a level of integral protection and recognizes its architectural, artistic, and historical interests. The declaration is effective from the day following its publication in the Official Gazette of Galicia, that is, November 5, and orders its entry in the Registry of Assets of Cultural Interest of Galicia and communication to the state registry.

A file dating back to 1980

The decree resolves a procedure with more than four decades of history. The Resolution of June 19, 1980, from the General Directorate of Artistic Heritage, Archives and Museums, had already initiated the declaration as a historical-artistic monument, published in BOE no. 199 of August 19, but the file was never resolved and is considered expired.

The new initiation arrived with the Resolution of February 11, 2025, from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, published in DOG no. 34 of February 19, 2025. No objections were presented during the public exhibition, and the file includes the two favorable and reasoned reports from consulting institutions required by article 18.2 of Law 5/2016, on the cultural heritage of Galicia.

From the legend of Xoán Folgoso to the disentailment

The origin of the convent dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. The construction, promoted by Alonso de Piña, prior of the monastery of Xunqueira de Ambía, is linked to the legend of the appearance of the Virgin with the Child Jesus to Xoán Folgoso, a resident of Trandeiras. Work began in 1520 under the direction of Bartolomé de Nosendo, one of the first documented Portuguese artists in Galicia.

Among the milestones listed in the annex are:

  • A fire on Christmas Day 1669 and another on February 3, 1813, with subsequent reconstructions.
  • The expulsion of the Franciscans following the Mendizábal disentailment (1836-1837), when the property passed into the hands of the State.
  • The auction of August 25, 1844, in which the convent was awarded to Cesáreo Paz.
  • The acquisition of the property by the City Council of Xinzo de Limia in 1990, along with the surrounding oak grove; the church already belonged to the bishopric of Ourense.
  • The 1988 intervention directed by architect J. Javier Suances Pereiro and the cleaning and consolidation works of 2023.

A monumental complex of which only the church is in good condition

It includes the church, the conventual dependencies around the cloister, the perimeter wall, the oven, the cattle shed, the hydraulic infrastructure, and the land originally used as a vegetable garden and woodland, which exceeds six hectares. Among the described elements, the following stand out:

  • The nave of the church, 10.65 meters wide and over 22.40 meters long, with a polygonal apse and ribbed vault.
  • The cloister, with a rectangular plan of 23 × 20 meters and a central patio of 15.80 × 12.10 meters, with 28 ogee arches.
  • The oven, an isolated building of 55 m², and the enclosure walls that reach up to three meters in height.
  • The water mines and channels, including one mine from 1754 and another built in 1709.

The declaration incorporates five altarpieces from the church, including that of the Christ on the Cold Stone, a 16th-century carving 1.50 meters high of unknown authorship, linked to the circle of the Master of Sobrado. The state of conservation is good in the church and the rehabilitated oven, while the cloister and the monastic dependencies present a “more or less stabilized ruin.”

Obligations for the property and limits to interventions

With integral protection, any intervention in the asset or its surroundings will require authorization from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, and admissible actions are reduced to research, valorization, maintenance, conservation, consolidation, restoration, and compatible rehabilitation. The decree further establishes:

  • The obligation to draft an integral conservation plan for works that go beyond mere conservation.
  • The duty of conservation and custody by the holders of real rights over the property.
  • Free public visitation a minimum of four days per month, for at least four hours a day.
  • Prior notification of any onerous transfer, indicating price and conditions.
  • The possibility of compulsory expropriation in case of failure to comply with conservation obligations.
  • The reduction of the impact of the road access built in the eighties and the recovery of the traditional path.

The decree is notified to the interested parties, the Diocese of Ourense, and the City Council of Xinzo de Limia. Against it, which exhausts the administrative route, an appeal for reversal may be filed within one month or a contentious-administrative appeal within two months before the High Court of Justice of Galicia.

The declaration closes a stage of legal uncertainty regarding one of the most significant historical buildings in the Limia region and provides the council, the owner since 1990, with a clear framework to attract investment in conservation and to design a use compatible with its values. It also opens the door for the State and the Xunta to include the property in their lines of action on heritage, something unthinkable while the file remained unresolved.
