Creation of the professional title of hotel housekeeper

The Ministry of Labor and Solidarity is creating a new professional title of hotel housekeeper (gouvernant en hôtellerie), via a decree dated July 7, 2026, published in the Official Journal of the French Republic (JORF No. 0210 of September 9, 2026, NOR TRSD2617880A). This title is registered in the national directory of professional certifications for a period of five years starting from December 18, 2026, classified at level 5 of the national framework for professional certifications and within activity field 334t (NSF code).

This certification is part of the hotel and restaurant sector, a field facing tension regarding professional integration. It revises and replaces the professional title of hotel housekeeper created by the decree of August 20, 2019, holders of whose professional skill certificates (CCP) may obtain the new certificates by correspondence.

A title structured into two skill blocks

The professional title of hotel housekeeper consists of two skill blocks, each validated by a professional skill certificate under the conditions provided by the decree of December 22, 2015:

• Controlling the quality of service production;
• Organizing and managing the work of service teams.

A mandatory period in a company

Candidates coming from a training path must complete a period in a company, supervised by a reference tutor, the minimum duration of which is set as follows:

• 350 hours for the professional title (280 hours in case of justified absence);
• 175 hours for the CCP “Controlling the quality of service production” (140 hours in case of justified absence);
• 175 hours for the CCP “Organizing and managing the work of service teams” (140 hours in case of justified absence).

This period is included in the company working time for candidates in work-study programs (apprenticeship contracts, professionalization contracts). Candidates for the validation of acquired experience (VAE) are exempt.

A profession at the heart of hotel accommodation

The hotel housekeeper handles the opening and closing of the service, plans and coordinates daily activity, and monitors cleaning and maintenance actions to guarantee the quality of service defined by the establishment’s standards. They primarily work in the accommodation department of hotel and para-hotel establishments, in hotels and tourist residences, as well as in companies providing outsourced cleaning services.

The jobs accessible to holders of this qualification correspond to ROME code G1503 (hotel housekeeper/governess), with opportunities such as housekeeper, floor supervisor, or executive housekeeper. The authority responsible for certification is the ministry in charge of employment, based on articles L. 335-5, L. 335-6 and R. 338-1 et seq. of the Education Code.

A certification serving integration

By registering this qualification in the national directory of professional certifications for five years, the State offers accommodation professionals official recognition of their skills, which is useful for both employees seeking qualification and employers in the hotel sector. This certification helps structure training pathways and meet the recruitment needs of a sector where service quality is a major factor in customer loyalty.
