Astorga opens a job bank for lifeguards for the municipal swimming pools
Por FactBox Admin

The Astorga City Council has approved the guidelines that will govern the establishment of an employment pool for lifeguard-instructors for the town’s municipal swimming pools. The call is formalized through Resolution 2026-0879, of October 2, 2026, from the Mayor’s Office of Astorga, signed by Mayor José Luís Nieto Martínez, and is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of León number 192, of October 8, 2026, with the official reference BOP-LE-2026-192002. Interested parties have a period of 5 business days, counting from the publication of the announcement, to submit their application.
The selection will be resolved through a competitive examination system (concurso-oposición) and will serve to create a job pool intended to cover temporary vacancies that arise within the labor staff of the Astorga City Council in the category of lifeguard-instructor. Except in cases where a grant or specific regulation establishes otherwise, this pool will be the sole channel for the selection of temporary labor personnel in said professional category.
The position includes teaching aquatic discipline courses in the pool and performing lifeguarding duties during periods when instructor tasks are not being carried out, in addition to occasional locker room attendant tasks. For matters not provided for in the guidelines, the process is subject to Law 7/1985, of April 2, regulating the Bases of the Local Regime; Royal Legislative Decree 781/1986, of April 18; Royal Legislative Decree 5/2015, of October 30, of the Basic Statute of the Public Employee; Royal Legislative Decree 2/2015, of October 23, of the Workers’ Statute, and Law 7/2005, of May 24, of the Public Service of Castilla y León.
Requirements and required qualifications
Applicants must meet the requirements on the date the application submission period ends. The conditions include:
- Possessing Spanish nationality or that of any of the member states of the European Union, or legal residence in Spain.
- Being at least 16 years old and not exceeding the maximum compulsory retirement age.
- Not having been separated or dismissed through disciplinary proceedings from any Public Administration.
- Not having been convicted or prosecuted for crimes of a sexual nature.
- Holding a basic Baccalaureate, F.P.I (Initial Vocational Training), School Graduate degree, or Graduate in Compulsory Secondary Education.
- Holding the official title of Swimming Instructor or in Rescue and Lifeguarding.
- Holding the official title of Aquatic Lifeguard.
Persons with disabilities will be admitted under equal conditions and may request adaptations of time and means from the selection board.
Selection tests and merit scale
The competitive phase consists of two eliminatory exercises. The first is a 40-question test on the syllabus of Annex I, valued at a maximum of 40 points and a minimum of 20 to pass; each correct answer adds 1 point and each mistake subtracts 0.20. The second is a physical fitness test of 32 points, with a minimum of 16, which includes:
- 200 meters of continuous swimming in less than 4:00 minutes for men and 4:10 for women.
- A 100-meter rescue combined event, starting from outside the pool, 50 meters of swimming, 12.5 meters of diving to retrieve a mannequin, and towing until the distance is completed, in a maximum of 3:00 minutes for men and 3:10 for women.
The merit phase values professional experience with 0.2 points for each month worked as a monitor or lifeguard in the Public Administration or in private companies, up to a maximum of 2 points, and the possession of the certificate for the use of the semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED), with 2 points.
Deadlines, fees, and operation of the pool
The application shall be submitted to the General Registry of the Astorga City Council using the standardized form of Annex II, accompanied by a copy of the ID (DNI), the required qualification, the supporting documentation for the merit phase, and proof of payment of the Group C2 fee, set at 5 euros, which shall be paid into account ES51 2080 0930 1231 1000 0015 (Abanca) in the name of the Astorga City Council. Long-term job seekers accredited by the State Public Employment Service or the corresponding regional service are exempt.
After the application period, the provisional lists of admitted and excluded candidates will be published, with 3 days for corrections and claims, and the composition of the qualifying tribunal will be announced. Candidates who pass the tests will have 2 business days to present the documents proving the requirements. The pool will remain in effect until the formation of a new employment pool for monitor-lifeguards, and the call-up will be made in strict order of qualification, with 24 hours to accept or reject the offer.
The call opens a stable access route to temporary employment in the municipal swimming pool service of Astorga and reinforces the coverage of the summer campaign, which the rules set between July 1 and September 30. For those qualified in aquatic lifesaving and swimming instruction in the region, the pool represents an opportunity for employment through a regulated and scored process, whose application period is only 5 business days from the publication of the announcement.
