Poland sets 2027 military qualification for men born in 2008

Poland’s Minister of National Defence has announced the 2027 military qualification, setting the nationwide announcement for 15 January 2027 and the qualification period from 1 February to 30 April 2027. The regulation, signed on 31 August 2026, was published in the Dziennik Ustaw (Journal of Laws) of 3 September 2026 under item poz. 1169.

The measure is issued under Article 57(7) of the Act of 11 March 2022 on the Defence of the Fatherland and determines the announcement date, the duration of the qualification, and the birth cohorts and groups of persons obliged to appear. It enters into force the day after its publication.

Who is called to appear

The regulation summons several categories of Polish citizens to the qualification boards:

• Men born in 2008, the principal new cohort reaching conscription age.
• Men born between 2003 and 2007 who do not yet hold a determined fitness category for active military service.
• Persons deemed temporarily unfit for military service on health grounds by district or voivodeship medical commissions in 2025 and 2026, where the period of unfitness expires before the end of the qualification, or where it expires afterwards and they have applied to change their fitness category.
• Women born between 2000 and 2008 holding qualifications useful for military service, or studying to obtain them, who in the 2026/2027 school or academic year complete studies or training in the fields listed under the implementing rules of Article 60(7) of the Defence of the Fatherland Act and have not yet appeared before a board.
• Volunteers aged 18 or over, as well as persons with an unsettled military status up to the end of the calendar year in which they turn 60, who have no determined fitness category and have reported voluntarily.

Scope and legal basis

The qualification is a routine annual procedure that assesses the physical and medical fitness of young Poles for potential military service and assigns each a fitness category. The 2027 edition is the first to draw on the cohort born in 2008, which will number in the hundreds of thousands of young men.

The regulation was signed on behalf of the minister by P. Bejda, and its legal foundation is the consolidated text of the Defence of the Fatherland Act, whose subsequent amendments were published in the Dziennik Ustaw of 2025 and 2026. The document is the operative instrument that local authorities and military commands will use to schedule the boards across the country.
