Nouvel appel à candidats pour la Commission fédérale de contrôle de l'euthanasie

The House of Representatives has published a new call for candidates for a mandate as a Dutch-speaking alternate member in the “doctor of medicine” category within the Federal Control and Evaluation Commission on the Application of the Law of 28 May 2002 on Euthanasia. The notice bears the reference C − 2026/006871 and appears in the Belgian Official Gazette of 29 September 2026, page 52285. The decision was taken in plenary session on 17 September 2026, after the previous call, published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 22 May 2026, failed to attract any candidates.

The Commission is the federal body responsible for the control and evaluation of the application of the law of 28 May 2002 on euthanasia; its powers and missions refer to Articles 7 et seq. of this law. Its members are appointed by royal decree deliberated in the Council of Ministers, from a double list presented by the House, for a renewable term of four years. Nominated candidates who are not appointed as effective members are appointed as alternate members.

On the same day, the House relaunched a second call for two mandates as French-speaking alternate members of the Central Penitentiary Supervisory Council (notice C − 2026/006872), also by decision of the plenary session of 17 September 2026.

A commission of sixteen members

  • Eight members are doctors of medicine, of whom at least four are lecturers, professors, or professors emeritus at a Belgian university.
  • Four members are lecturers, professors, or professors emeritus of law at a Belgian university, or lawyers.
  • Four members come from circles dealing with the issues of patients suffering from an incurable illness.

The composition respects linguistic parity, with each linguistic group including at least three candidates of each sex. Members are appointed based on their knowledge and experience in matters falling within the competence of the Commission. Membership is incompatible with a mandate as a member of one of the legislative assemblies and with that of a member of the federal government or a community or regional government.

Applications within thirty days

Applications, accompanied by a curriculum vitae, must be submitted by registered mail no later than thirty days after the publication of the notice, i.e., by the end of October 2026, and addressed to the President of the House of Representatives, Palais de la Nation, 1008 Brussels. They must be accompanied by documents proving that the candidates hold the qualification of “doctor of medicine”.

Further information can be obtained from the General Secretariat of the House of Representatives, at 02 549 84 21 or by email at secretariat.general@lachambre.be. Candidates’ personal data are processed in accordance with the privacy statement appearing on the House’s website.

One seat still to be filled

The position in question is a substitute mandate reserved for the Dutch linguistic group, in the medical category of the Commission. The absence of applications during the first call leaves this seat vacant until the appointment of a holder by royal decree, from the double list that the House will transmit to the government.

The thirty-day deadline runs from the publication of September 29, 2026: late applications will not be admissible. Interested Dutch-speaking physicians must therefore compile their file and send it by registered mail within this timeframe.
