MINAM recognizes the Zoo Perú II Private Conservation Area in Loreto

The Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) recognized a property of 40.3125 hectares located in the district of San Juan Bautista, province of Maynas, department of Loreto, as the “Zoo Perú II” Private Conservation Area for a period of ten (10) years. The decision was formalized through Ministerial Resolution No. D000294-2026-MINAM, signed in Magdalena del Mar on September 8, 2026, and published in the Legal Norms section of the Official Gazette El Peruano on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The recognition was requested by Gerardo Luis Arrieta Pastrana, representing the owner Antony James Taggart, and has the favorable opinion of the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP). The resolution was signed by the Minister of the Environment, Vladimiro Huaroc Portocarrero.

Objective and scope of conservation

The general objective of the area is the conservation of the biodiversity of wild flora and fauna of the primary forest representative of the property, contributing to the continuity of the ecological processes of the Nanay river basin, on the Iquitos – Nauta route. The area is established on the property registered under Electronic Entry No. 04006327 of the Real Estate Property Registry of the Maynas Registry Office, Registry Zone No. IV – Iquitos Headquarters.

The regulatory framework is based on Law No. 26834, the Natural Protected Areas Law, and its Regulations approved by Supreme Decree No. 038-2001-AG, as well as the Complementary Provisions for the Recognition of Private Conservation Areas, approved by Presidential Resolution No. 162-2021-SERNANP.

Obligations of the owner

The recognition imposes a series of binding obligations on the holder during the validity of the area, including:

• Use the property exclusively for the conservation purposes for which it was recognized.
• Provide the SERNANP representative with the facilities for the supervision of the area.
• Comply with the commitment to conserve the forest cover of the Limited Use Zone, in accordance with the Technical Sheet (Master Plan), with a renewable validity of five (5) years.
• Submit an annual report to SERNANP on the fulfillment of the commitments.
• Communicate in writing any change of address, legal representative, or transfer of ownership.

Registry registration and validity

SERNANP must register the burdens and special conditions of use before the National Superintendency of Public Registries (SUNARP), in accordance with Article 17 of the Complementary Provisions and Article 76 of the Regulations of the Natural Protected Areas Law. The recognition does not imply the validation of any real right over the area nor does it constitute evidence for the formalization of ownership.

The resolution was published on the same day on the digital headquarters of MINAM (www.gob.pe/minam) and in the Official Gazette El Peruano. With this recognition, the Peruvian State expands private conservation coverage in the Amazon, protecting primary forest of high ecological value and strengthening opportunities for scientific research, education, and specialized tourism on the Iquitos – Nauta route, for the benefit of the communities of Loreto.
