ULPGC announces 42 predoctoral contracts with 1.04 million euros

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has announced 42 predoctoral research training contracts for 2026 through the Resolution of September 14, 2026, from the Vice-Rectorate for Research, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (Boletín Oficial de Canarias) no. 193, dated September 25, 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically within ten calendar days starting from the business day following the publication. The call is subject to the existence of adequate and sufficient credit.

The resolution, number 2026-0230 and dated September 14, 2026, is signed by the Vice-Rector for Research, Juan Alberto Corbera Sánchez, acting by delegation of the Rector in accordance with the Resolution of July 30, 2026 (BOC no. 161, dated August 12, 2026), and as part of proposal PR/2026/1600. It is issued under Law 14/2011, of June 1, on Science, Technology and Innovation; Royal Decree 103/2019, of March 1, which approves the Statute of predoctoral research training personnel; and Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, on the University System (LOSU).

The grants, referred to as PIF, are purpose-specific and are intended exclusively to finance the hiring, without direct delivery of funds to the beneficiaries. They are granted through a competitive process, with publicity, transparency, objectivity, equality, and non-discrimination, and will be registered in the National Grants Database.

42 grants with reserves for disability and associate faculty

• Total: 42 predoctoral contracts.
• 3 grants reserved for persons with a disability equal to or greater than 33%; if not filled, they will be added to the general group.
• 7 grants reserved for non-doctoral associate faculty linked to the ULPGC at the time of the call’s publication and with at least five academic years of linkage in the last seven years, in application of the eighth transitional provision b) of the LOSU.
• Group 1 (branches of knowledge): 7 contracts per branch, up to 35 in total, distributed among Sciences, Health Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, Social and Legal Sciences, and Arts and Humanities.
• Group 2 (non-doctoral teaching staff): any vacancies that arise will be added to Group 1.

Funding, duration, and contract conditions

• Gross remuneration of 1,560.53 euros per month for the first two years; 1,671.99 euros for the third year; and 2,089.99 euros for the fourth year (also fifth and sixth in case of disability), with 12 monthly payments and two prorated extraordinary payments.
• Minimum duration of one year and maximum of four, extendable to six years for people with disabilities.
• Postdoctoral orientation period of up to 12 months after obtaining the doctorate, not exceeding four total years.
• Collaboration in practical teaching of up to 60 hours per academic year, only in Undergraduate degrees.
• Defense of the doctoral thesis within a maximum of twelve months from the end of the contract, with an exceptional extension of up to one year.

Requirements, scoring, and processing

• The thesis director must be a doctor with a permanent link to the ULPGC, with an active “sexenio” (six-year research productivity bonus) and affiliated with a Recognized Research Group (GIR).
• Each GIR may obtain a maximum of two predoctoral contracts.
• Collective 2 requires at least two scientific publications and 16 points of research productivity.
• Scoring: up to 75 points for academic trajectory (60 for weighted average grade and 15 for curricular merits) and up to 25 for the team (10 for the thesis director and 15 for the GIR classification).
• The Selection Committee is chaired by the Director of Research Human Resources, with two members from the delegated Research Commission of the Governing Council and a civil servant from the Research Service as secretary, with voice but no vote.
• The award resolution will be issued within six months following the closing of the application period.

Funding of the call

The resolution authorizes an expenditure of 159,389.16 euros for the 2026 fiscal year, destined for the period between November and December of the contracts from the previous call, charged to budget application 02401-42B-6450215, SI-2503, and credit retention no. 283. The call is funded by the direct grant named “ULPGC Predoctoral Program” (file SD2605, SI-2503), amounting to 1,043,696.22 euros, and may be supplemented by the university’s own budget and contributions from the ACIISI of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.

The call opens a stable funding route for those starting their research career in the Canary Islands and reinforces the attraction of talent to the research groups of the ULPGC. Interested doctoral students have ten calendar days to submit their application via the electronic office, along with the documentation of the thesis director and the affiliated GIR.
