Treasury sets the specific tax on fuels starting September 3

Por FactBox Admin

The Ministry of Finance has determined the variable components of the specific tax on fuels that will be in effect as of September 3, 2026, according to exempt decree No. 251, signed on September 1 in Santiago. The regulation, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Chile No. 44,540 on September 2, 2026, sets the resulting rates for gasoline, diesel oil, liquefied gas, and compressed natural gas for vehicular use.

The administrative act is issued by virtue of Law No. 18,502, which establishes taxes on fuels, and Law No. 20,765, which creates the Fuel Price Stabilization Mechanism, along with its regulation approved by supreme decree No. 1,119 of 2014. The estimates are based on ordinary letters No. 836 and No. 837, both dated August 31, 2026, from the National Energy Commission.

Determined variable components

The decree sets the following variable components, expressed in UTM per cubic meter, which are added to or subtracted from the base component as provided in Article 3 of Law No. 20,765:

  • 93 octane automotive gasoline: -1.6788 UTM/m³
  • 97 octane automotive gasoline: -1.9298 UTM/m³
  • Diesel oil: -3.4780 UTM/m³
  • Liquefied petroleum gas for vehicular use: 0.0855 UTM/m³
  • Compressed natural gas for vehicular use: 0.1299 UTM/1,000 m³

Resulting specific tax rates

As a result of the application of these components, the specific tax rates for the week beginning Thursday, September 3, are as follows:

  • 93 octane gasoline: base component 6.0000, variable -1.6788, resulting 4.3212 UTM/m³
  • 97 octane gasoline: base 6.0000, variable -1.9298, resulting 4.0702 UTM/m³
  • Diesel oil: base 1.5000, variable -3.4780, resulting -1.9780 UTM/m³
  • LPG for vehicular use: base 1.4000, variable 0.0855, resulting 1.4855 UTM/m³
  • CNG for vehicular use: base 1.9300, variable 0.1299, resulting 2.0599 UTM/1,000 m³

Publication and validity

The decree provides that the variable components apply as of September 3, 2026, and orders the publication of the decree on the institutional website of the Ministry of Finance through a technical report, in accordance with Article 5 of Law No. 20,765. The act was signed by order of the President of the Republic by the Minister of Finance, Jorge Antonio Quiroz Castro, and the document bears the advanced electronic signature of the director of the Official Gazette, Giovanni Calderón Bassi.

The reduction of the variable component in gasoline and diesel, and its slight increase in LPG and CNG, translates into a direct adjustment of the final price paid by drivers and freight and passenger transport. For motorists and logistics companies, the immediate effectiveness of these rates starting September 3 implies a change in the supply cost that should be anticipated in fuel expenditure planning.
