Guadix approves the ordinance regulating the signage of its streets

The Guadix City Council has finalized the Regulatory Ordinance for the Naming and Signage of Streets and other urban routes of the City of Guadix, which sets the criteria for the municipal nomenclator and establishes fines of up to 3,000 euros for altering or removing signs. The regulation is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Granada number 164, dated August 26, 2026, following the Mayoral Resolution number 2026-1227, dated August 17.

The ordinance, signed by Mayor Jesús Rafael Lorente Fernández, regulates the naming and signage of streets, urban routes, buildings, and municipal spaces, as well as the numbering of properties throughout the municipal district. The authority to assign names belongs exclusively to the City Council, and only the names attributed by it will have official status and mandatory use for all legal purposes.

Nomenclator Criteria

The selection of names will respond to criteria of historical, cultural, and topographical significance, with priority given to illustrious people from Guadix and, subsequently, from Andalusia, Spain, Spanish America, and the rest of the world. Names consolidated by popular use will be maintained, and changes in denomination will only be possible due to legal or urban planning requirements, following a thirty-day public exhibition for allegations.

• Names already existing in the street directory will not be repeated, even if they refer to routes of a different nature.
• Streets that, due to their morphology, should have a single denomination will not be split.
• It is recommended to use monuments, fountains, or commemorative plaques to remember relevant figures and avoid the overcrowding of streets with people’s names.
• For people’s names, efforts will be made to ensure they are short, clear, and unmistakable, without prepending titles or the preposition “de”.

Signage and Numbering

The signage of public routes is a public service and will be carried out using ceramic plaques fixed to facades, featuring the official shield of the City Council, a blue border, and green text. Private individuals, associations, or other institutions may not place signs different from the official model.

The numbering of properties will be continuous, with even numbers on the right and odd numbers on the left from the end closest to the City Council. The number identification plaque will be placed by the property owner at their own expense, and premises will be identified by staircase, floor, and location.

Duties and Sanctions

Citizens have the obligation to cooperate and may not oppose the placement of street signs, numbering, or other public service indications on the facades of their houses, an easement that shall be free of charge. It is prohibited to alter or hide the signage or numbering of routes and buildings.

• Minor offenses (placing non-approved labels or numbers): fine of 300 to 600 euros.
• Serious offenses (preventing the placement of labels or failing to place them in new housing developments and homes): fine of 601 to 1,500 euros.
• Very serious offenses (removing or damaging labels or numbers through fault or gross negligence): fine of 1,501 to 3,000 euros.

The ordinance will enter into force fifteen days after its full publication in the Official Gazette of the Province of Granada, in accordance with articles 65.2 and 70.2 of Law 7/1985, of April 2, Regulating the Bases of the Local Regime. With this regulation, the municipality of Almería homogeneously organizes its street directory and protects the urban image, while transferring the responsibility of maintaining official signage to residents and property owners.
