Guadiana temporarily suspends its municipal daycare center due to lack of students
Por FactBox Admin

The Guadiana City Council (Badajoz) has initially approved the temporary suspension of the municipal daycare public service for the current school year, motivated by the shortage of students and the economic and financial unsustainability of the service. The agreement was adopted by the City Council Plenary in an ordinary session held on October 8, 2026, and is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Badajoz No. 199, dated October 16, 2026, via announcement 4091/2026. With its publication, a period of 20 business days opens for interested parties to submit allegations.
The file is submitted for public information in accordance with the provisions of Article 83 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations, and Article 22.2 of Law 7/1985, of April 2, Regulating the Bases of the Local Regime. The announcement appears in the Local Administration section of the provincial gazette, within the city councils section, and is signed by the mayor, Antonio Pozo Pitel.
This is an initial approval, not a definitive one: the plenary agreement now opens the public exhibition phase prior to its final resolution, which in this type of local public service files is processed without the need for a new pronouncement from the Plenary if no claims are presented.
Reasons alleged by the Council
The plenary agreement invokes two reasons to justify the temporary suspension of the municipal daycare service during the current school year:
- Insufficient demand, expressed in the announcement as a shortage of students.
- Economic and financial unsustainability of the public service.
The suspension is proposed on a temporary basis and refers to the current school year, not as a definitive suppression of the service, as can be seen from the text of the published agreement itself.
Twenty business days to allege
The public information period is 20 business days and is calculated from the day following the publication of the announcement in the Official Gazette of the Province of Badajoz, that is, starting from October 17, 2026. During that period, the file may be consulted through two channels:
- The offices of the General Secretariat of the Guadiana City Council, during office hours from 9:00 to 14:00.
- The municipal electronic office, on the virtual notice board accessible at https://guadiana.sedelectronica.es/info.0.
Interested parties may formulate allegations, claims, or suggestions. The announcement specifies that, if none are presented during the public exhibition period, the initial agreement will be understood as definitively approved without the need to adopt a new plenary agreement, proceeding then to the effectiveness of the service suspension.
Other open files in the municipality
The suspension of the daycare center coincides in time with other municipal proceedings from Guadiana published in the same provincial bulletin in the preceding weeks:
- Announcement 4020/2026, of October 13, 2026: public information regarding the technical project for the expansion of the municipal cemetery, including the installation of 42 prefabricated niches and a period of twenty business days for submissions.
- Announcement 3581/2026, of September 18, 2026: initial approval of the feasibility study file for the works and services concession contract, processed via Mayoral Resolution No. 2026-009 in accordance with article 247.3 of Law 9/2017, of November 8, on Public Sector Contracts, with one month of public information.
Impact on families
The decision directly affects families in the municipality with children of preschool age, who could be left without the municipal daycare service during the current school year if the initial agreement is confirmed. The file remains open for neighborhood participation over the coming weeks, meaning that submissions presented within the deadline will be decisive in determining whether the Plenary must rule again before the suspension becomes effective.
