Galicia extends precautionary measures against nodular dermatosis

The Department of Rural Affairs maintains the precautionary measures against contagious nodular dermatosis until September 30, 2026, through the Resolution of August 25, 2026, of the General Directorate of Livestock, Agriculture and Agri-food Industries, published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) no. 163, of August 28, in section III of other provisions (p. 46881). The measure extends the validity of the previous resolution, whose effects ended on August 31.

Contagious nodular dermatosis is a highly diffusible viral disease that entails significant losses both in affected farms and generally across the bovine sector. The decision comes after the disease was detected in Spanish territory last October in Catalonia, in the province of Girona, and subsequently in Aragon, which raised the risk level of appearance in Galicia.

Background and regulatory framework

The new resolution extends the measures collected in the Resolution of March 25, 2026, published in DOG no. 59, of March 30, under the Resolution of July 27, 2026, published in DOG no. 142, of July 30. Despite the favorable evolution of the epidemiological situation in Catalonia and Aragon and the vaccination plan established in certain areas of Spain, it is considered advisable to maintain the measures following the analysis of the current sanitary risk.

The resolution is based on the following legal grounds:

• Regulation (EU) 2016/429 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of March 9, 2016, on transmissible animal diseases.
• Article 8 of sanitary safeguard measures of Law 8/2003, of April 24, on animal health.
• Article 19 of Decree 223/2022, of December 22, establishing the organic structure of the Department of Rural Affairs.

Validity and scope

The resolution takes effect from September 1 until September 30, 2026, both inclusive, and may be extended by resolution according to the epidemiological evolution of the disease. The document is signed by Silvestre José Balseiros Guinarte, General Director of Livestock, Agriculture and Agri-food Industries, in Santiago de Compostela.

The resolution does not end the administrative route, and an appeal for reversal (recurso de alzada) may be filed against it before the Regional Minister of Rural Affairs, within a period of one month starting from the day following its publication in the DOG, in accordance with articles 121 and 122 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the common administrative procedure.

Impact for the sector

The extension keeps the prevention and control measures active at a time when the disease remains present in nearby communities, which directly affects the Galician bovine sector, one of the pillars of the community’s agricultural economy. The validity until the end of September provides farms with the margin to plan their activity while the epidemiological evolution of the disease is monitored.
