Galicia sets the ten Sundays and holidays for commercial opening in 2027

The Department of Employment, Trade and Emigration has set the ten Sundays and holidays on which Galician commercial establishments may remain open to the public during the year 2027. The decision is detailed in the Order of September 10, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) no. 181, of September 23, 2026, on pages 50061 and 50062, under the reference CVE-DOG: 4jltqib0-jij9-co71-xv26-jnxarluxrfg3. The regulation bears the signature of the counselor José González Vázquez.

The ten authorized dates

The single article of the order lists the working days for commercial activity in 2027:

• January 3.
• January 10.
• March 25.
• June 27.
• October 31.
• November 28.
• December 5.
• December 12.
• December 19.
• December 26.

The list concentrates four of the ten days in December, while January provides two Sundays and the rest are distributed among March, June, October, and November.

Legal framework and prior consultations

The determination derives from Law 13/2006, of December 27, on commercial hours in Galicia, modified by Law 1/2013, of February 13. Article 5 of that regulation establishes that the Sundays and holidays of opening shall be a maximum of ten per year, and Article 6 attributes their annual determination to the department competent in trade matters, via an order that must be published in the DOG before October 15 of the year prior to its application.

Before approving the calendar, the department consulted the most representative consumer associations with implementation throughout the community, the Galician Council of Official Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Galicia, and other most representative business and trade union organizations of the commercial sector in Galicia. The department’s competence in trade matters is based on Decree 147/2024, of May 20, which establishes the organic structure of the Department of Employment, Trade and Emigration (DOG no. 101, of May 27).

Municipalities may request two dates

Once the dates are published, any municipality may request the department to modify two days for its municipal district. The request must be reasoned and submitted before November 15, accompanied by reports from the chamber of commerce, industry and navigation of the area and the most representative business and trade union organizations of the commercial sector.

The department will resolve within a period of fifteen days from the submission of the request. If there is no express resolution within that period, the request shall be considered granted. Approved changes will be published in the DOG before December 15.

Impact for the sector

The calendar directly affects the entire Galician commercial sector, retail workers, and consumer associations, as the opening days for the coming year are fixed in advance. For the city councils, the November 15 deadline is the only window to adapt the calendar to their local holidays and commercial interests.
