Commerce in the Balearic Islands will be able to open ten days in 2027
Por FactBox Admin

Businesses in the Balearic Islands will be able to remain open to the public for ten days during 2027, according to the calendar established by Resolution 10357 of the Minister of Enterprise, Freelancers and Energy, published in BOIB no. 135 on October 22, 2026 (p. 57159). The decision comes after the Inter-Island Trade Advisory Commission proposed the calendar in the session of October 7, 2026. The text specifies six Sundays, three Mondays, and one Thursday, and reserves two dates so that city councils may exchange them.
Article 18 of Law 11/2014, of October 15, on trade in the Balearic Islands, amended by Law 17/2016, of December 16, limits to ten the annual number of Sundays and other holidays with authorized commercial opening and requires the dates to be determined each year through a resolution by the competent body in trade matters. The regulation is framed within Decree 10/2025, of July 14, on the basic organic structure of the ministries, and in the delegation of powers of the minister of July 22, 2025 (BOIB no. 97, of July 24). The document appears signed by the Director General of Enterprise, Freelancers and Trade, Maria Antònia Sansó Jaume, by delegation of the minister Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro García, with an electronic signature date of October 14, 2026.
Six Sundays, three Mondays and one Thursday
The ten authorized opening days in 2027 are:
- January 3, Sunday
- January 17, Sunday
- March 1, Monday
- March 25, Thursday
- May 2, Sunday
- November 1, Monday
- November 28, Sunday
- December 6, Monday
- December 12, Sunday
- December 19, Sunday
The calendar concentrates half of the openings in the final stretch of the year: five of the ten days fall between November 1 and December 19, coinciding with the Christmas campaign. The rest are distributed between two dates in January, one in March, another in May, and March 25, Thursday, which is the only date not linked to a Sunday or a Monday.
Two interchangeable dates until November 15
Article 18.4 of Law 11/2014 allows city councils to substitute two of the fixed dates. The resolution explicitly indicates which they are:
- January 17, Sunday
- March 1, Monday
Councils interested in changing them must communicate the decision to the competent body in trade matters before November 15; otherwise, it is understood that they do not wish to introduce any modification regarding the determined days. This substitution window is the only municipal margin over a calendar that remains closed for the rest of the year by regional resolution.
Administrative route exhausted
The resolution ends the administrative route. Against it, the following may be filed:
- An optional appeal for reversal before the Minister of Business, Self-Employed and Energy, within a period of one month counted from the day following the publication, in accordance with Article 124 of Law 39/2015 and Article 57 of Law 3/2003.
- A contentious-administrative appeal before the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands, within a period of two months from the day following the publication, according to Article 46 of Law 29/1998.
The commercial calendar is a key piece for the sector’s planning: it determines the shifts and hiring of businesses, influences tourist spending during the low season, and sets consumer expectations, especially in an autumn with five opening days in just over seven weeks.
