Education incorporates priority students into the school subsidy

Por FactBox Admin

The Undersecretariat of Education accepted the review requests submitted by students and their families and incorporated them into the list of preferential students benefiting from the Preferential School Grant established by Law No. 20,248. The decision was formalized in exempt resolution No. 4,596, dated July 30, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Chile on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 (No. 44,527, CVE 2852869).

The administrative act, signed by the Undersecretary of Education, Daniel Rodríguez Morales, complements exempt resolution No. 2,151 of 2026, which determined the list of preferential students for the year 2027. With this measure, the original list is replaced to incorporate those who meet the requirements and were not previously listed.

Regulatory Framework

The Preferential School Grant is governed by Law No. 20,248 and benefits subsidized establishments for each priority or preferential student enrolled in preschool, primary, or secondary education. The status of preferential student is determined by the Ministry of Education, which must inform the family and the establishment’s maintainer annually.

Decree No. 515 of 2015, from the Ministry of Education, regulates the methodology for identifying these students and provides a review mechanism. Those who disagree with the determination may request a review of their records within a period of 20 business days from notification.

Review Procedure

The General Education Division, through ordinary letter No. 05/2128, dated July 17, 2026, communicated the cases that, after the ex officio review process or upon request, met the criteria to be qualified as preferential. Based on this, the resolution accepting the petitions was issued.

The incorporated students are individualized in the digital file “03-2027-ALUMNOS_PREFERENTES”, which is an integral part of the resolution and will be distributed in digital format by the General Education Division.

Notification and Data Protection

The determination of preferential status will be informed to students, mothers, fathers, and guardians through the Ministry of Education certificate system (certificados.mineduc.cl). Maintainers will be notified of the list of enrolled students through the General Student Information System (SIGE).

The Ministry of Education will adopt the necessary measures to ensure the confidentiality of the preferential student status, in accordance with Law No. 19,628, on the Protection of Private Life or Protection of Personal Data.

Impact for Families

The inclusion of these students in the priority list means that their establishments may receive the corresponding additional subsidy, which strengthens the funding of education for those in situations of vulnerability. For families, the measure confirms their children’s right to be considered beneficiaries and guarantees that the background review can correct previous exclusions.
