Por FactBox Admin

The Governing Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Costa Rica has suspended Dr. Brandon Briceño Sandí, code MEDI 5617, from professional practice for one year and three months. The measure is effective from September 18, 2026, to December 18, 2027, both dates inclusive, and is published in La Gaceta No. 188 on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, page 145, under official reference IN202601129268.
The sanction and its calculation
The official notice specifies that the suspension was imposed by the Medical Ethics Tribunal (TEM) of the professional college and became final following the agreement of the Governing Board in ordinary session 2026-09-02, held on September 2, 2026, which confirmed in all respects the resolution of the final act and the sanction imposed.
- Sanction: suspension from professional practice for one year and three months.
- Sanctioned person: Dr. Brandon Briceño Sandí, code MEDI 5617.
- Compliance period: from September 18, 2026, to December 18, 2027, both dates inclusive.
- Disciplinary file: No. 177-2024TEM.
- Substantive resolution: Medical Ethics Tribunal, at ten o’clock on February 19, 2026.
The Governing Board further agreed to record the sanction in the Registry of Offenders maintained by the corporation’s General Prosecutor’s Office and to issue the standard official letters to the corresponding authorities to ensure compliance with the provisions. The notice is signed by Dr. Elliott Garita Jiménez, president of the college.
The regulatory framework of the publication
The disclosure is based on Article 22 of the Organic Law of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Costa Rica, which mandates the publication of any suspension of professional practice in the Official Gazette La Gaceta once the sanction becomes final. The regulation was amended by Article 10 of Law No. 9809 of February 4, 2020.
The disclosure agreement was adopted in Governing Board session No. 2026-09-23, taken in an ordinary session held on September 23, 2026, three weeks after the case became final.
Other suspensions in the same session
On the same page of the bulletin, the Governing Board communicated another suspension agreed upon in session 2026-09-23:
- Dr. Alfredo Ramírez Montero, code MED668, suspended for two years and three months.
- File No. 303-2024TEM, with a resolution from the Medical Ethics Tribunal at eleven o’clock on August 27, 2026.
- Compliance period: from September 23, 2026, to December 23, 2028, both dates inclusive.
- Official reference: IN202601129267.
The publication serves a public control function: any patient, employer, or institution can verify in the Official Gazette that the professional is disqualified from practicing during the indicated period. The suspension of one year and three months prevents Dr. Briceño Sandí from signing reports, prescriptions, and medical certificates, and his registration in the Registry of Offenders of the college’s General Prosecutor’s Office provides a permanent record of the disciplinary precedent.
