Canary Islands pays rental aid to those affected by the La Palma volcano

The Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands has published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) No. 178, dated Friday, September 4, 2026, six resolutions from the Director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute granting and paying, upon justification, emergency financial aid for the rental of primary residences intended for family or cohabitation units affected by the volcanic eruptions on the island of La Palma. The resolutions, all dated August 24, 2026, correspond to the fifth, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth four-month periods.

Regulatory Framework and Beneficiaries

The aid is governed by the Order of the Counselor of Public Works, Transport and Housing, of April 19, 2022, which approves the regulatory bases of the aid line, as amended by the Joint Order of August 20, 2025. Eligible beneficiaries are family or cohabitation units with partial losses or damages to the housing they occupied as their primary residence in the municipalities of Tazacorte, El Paso, and Los Llanos de Aridane, registered in the Registry of Affected Persons created by Decree-Law 14/2021, of October 28.

The maximum amount of aid cannot exceed 6.6 euros per square meter of construction per month per dwelling, with a cap of 594.00 euros per month. Payment is made for expired four-month periods, following the submission of rental payment receipts within a maximum period of three months.

Amounts Granted per Four-Month Period

The six resolutions total 43,433.62 euros, financed through budget application 4901 261A 4800200 41V4902, action line 494G1307, of the Institute’s 2026 budget:

• Fifth four-month period (resolution 3161): 800.00 euros.
• Eighth four-month period (resolution 3162): 2,191.20 euros.
• Ninth four-month period (resolution 3163): 3,536.50 euros.
• Tenth four-month period (resolution 3164): 4,870.40 euros.
• Eleventh four-month period (resolution 3165): 5,896.00 euros.
• Twelfth four-month period (resolution 3166): 26,139.52 euros.

Conditions and Justification

The grants are declared fully justified and represent a maximum amount, with the final sum determined based on the accredited eligible expenses. They are compatible with other aid for the same purpose, provided they do not exceed the value of the rental rent, and the beneficiary must report any other grant obtained. Beneficiaries must retain the supporting documents for a period of no less than four years.

The procedure is initiated ex officio by the Administration, without the need for a prior application, and the granting is determined based on the report of the instructing body starting from the assessments of the Registry of affected persons. Due to the special nature of the aid, the resolution exempts the beneficiaries from complying with the requirements of Article 13.2 of the General Subsidies Law 38/2003, of November 17.

Relevance of the measure

These resolutions guarantee the continuity of public support for families who have not yet been able to recover their primary residence following the eruption of the La Palma volcano, covering the most recent four-month periods of the eligible period. For the victims of Tazacorte, El Paso, and Los Llanos de Aridane, the timely payment of this aid provides direct relief in sustaining rent while the circumstances that motivated its granting persist.
