Brigadier General Sérgio Estrela will command EU military mission in Mozambique

The President of the Republic, António José Martins Seguro, has appointed Graduated Brigadier-General, Aviator Pilot, Sérgio Lino de Almeida Estrela to the position of Mission Force Commander of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in the Republic of Mozambique. The appointment is set forth in the Decree of the President of the Republic No. 133-A/2026, signed on September 7 and published in the supplement of the 1st series of the Diário da República No. 174, dated September 8, 2026.

The decree takes effect from September 9, 2026, and remains in force until September 8, 2027, i.e., for a period of one year.

Legal Framework

The appointment is made under the terms of paragraph h) of No. 2 of Article 9 of Organic Law No. 1-B/2009, of July 7, in its current wording, which grants the President of the Republic the competence to appoint commanders of military missions in which Portugal participates within the framework of international organizations.

The position is held upon a proposal from the Government, formulated following an initiative by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, reflecting the concerted decision-making process between the sovereign bodies and the military leadership.
