Bank of Italy: four research grants and seven scholarships
Por FactBox Admin

The Bank of Italy is offering four research fellowships for economists and seven scholarships named after Bonaldo Stringher, Giorgio Mortara, and Donato Menichella. The two calls for applications, marked by references 26E05529 and 26E05530, are published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic, 4th Special Series “Competitions and Exams” no. 79 of October 13, 2026. Both notices are signed by Director General Angelini and are dated October 1, 2026 (research fellowships) and September 30, 2026 (scholarships).
Four research fellowships for the Economics and Statistics Department
The research fellowships (fellowships) are intended for individuals holding a PhD or doctorate, or about to obtain one, with interest and experience in applied economic research and its economic policy implications. The fellowships last twelve months and are renewable for a maximum of an additional twelve months; they are based in Rome at the Economics and Statistics Department.
The research areas covered are:
- Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics and Monetary Policy;
- Macroeconometrics, Financial and Credit Markets and the Macroeconomy;
- Financial Economics, Banking, Financial Institutions and Markets;
- Financial Stability and Macroprudential Policy;
- International Economics and Finance, International Trade;
- Industrial Organization and Digital Markets, Public Economics and Fiscal Policy;
- Applied Microeconomic Analysis, Economic Growth, Law and Economics.
The successful candidates will develop a research project proposed by them within one of the Department’s services, with the head of the service acting as the reference. At the end of the first year, they will be called for a selection process for permanent employment in the managerial and high-professional area, professional segment of counselor; in the event of a positive outcome, they will normally be assigned to the service where they held the fellowship.
Seven scholarships for postgraduate study abroad
The second call offers seven scholarships for brilliant recent graduates who intend to further their studies abroad at universities of excellence, with the obligation to attend a course of no less than nine months’ duration during the 2027/2028 academic year:
- three “Bonaldo Stringher” scholarships (letter A), for political economy and economic policy;
- two “Giorgio Mortara” scholarships (letter B), for financial economics, econometrics or mathematical, statistical and computer methods applied to economics and finance;
- two “Donato Menichella” scholarships (letter C), on the interrelationships between economic growth and the legal system, on the impacts of regulation and on the legal aspects of digital assets and artificial intelligence applied to economics.
Applicants may compete for only one type of scholarship. The examining committees are appointed by the Bank of Italy and composed of academics from the Lincei and/or university professors; in addition to the winners, they identify up to twelve “particularly deserving” individuals for the Stringher scholarships and eight for each of the Mortara and Menichella competitions, to be called for research start-up grants and the employment examination.
Requirements, amounts and deadlines
- Research grants: applications by November 13, 2026, 12:00 PM, via the Bank of Italy’s “Competitions and Selections Portal”; at least two reference letters; interviews in December 2026 online; seminars tentatively starting from early January 2027; start of grants by November 2027; monthly stipends of 5,500 euros gross.
- Scholarships: application by November 20, 2026, 12:00 PM; Master’s degree obtained after November 19, 2024, from an Italian university with a score not lower than 110/110; amount of 33,000 euros gross in four installments, including travel and insurance expenses, with university tuition fees covered by the Bank of Italy; allocation presumably by the first ten days of February 2027.
For young researchers, this represents a dual entry channel: research grants pave the way for a possible permanent contract at the Bank of Italy, while scholarships fund a year of training abroad with the prospect of research start-up grants and an employment examination. The close deadlines in November make the early preparation of papers, research statements, and references decisive.
