Asturias regulates grants for educational projects in Asturian Llume

The Department of Education of the Principality of Asturias has approved Order EDU of August 10, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA) No. 174 of September 9, 2026 (official reference 2026-07343), which establishes the procedure for the recognition of “Llume” educational projects in Asturian and approves the regulatory bases for the granting of aid to the teaching centers that develop them. The regulation, signed by the counselor Eva Ledo Cabaleiro, will enter into force twenty days after its publication.

The “Llume” educational project aims to recognize the excellence of teaching centers in the teaching, promotion, and dissemination of the Asturian language and Galician-Asturian/Eonaviego. The order is framed within the mandate of the Statute of Autonomy of Asturias and Law 1/1998, of March 23, on the use and promotion of Bable/Asturian, which guarantees its teaching at all levels and grades on a voluntary basis.

Beneficiaries and requirements

Beneficiaries may include public centers of the Principality of Asturias and private centers supported by public funds, at non-university levels, that teach the area or subject of Asturian Language and Literature (in Asturian or in Galician-Asturian/Eonaviego). Key requirements include:

• Not having received aid for the “Llume” project in the previous four academic years.
• Having justified previous aid granted by the Administration of the Principality.
• In the case of private centers, being up to date with tax obligations and Social Security.

Procedure and evaluation

The granting will be processed under a competitive bidding regime, through the evaluation of the submitted projects. The evaluation commission will be chaired by the head of the general directorate competent in academic organization and composed of at least three career civil servant members with accreditation in Bable/Asturian or Eonaviego. Projects will be scored from 0 to 1,000 points based on the quality of the project, the center’s context, and its history in related initiatives.

The educational project must be written entirely in the Asturian language or in Galician-Asturian/Eonaviego, be original in nature, and be oriented toward the objectives of the call, incorporating elements of educational inclusion, sustainability, a competency-based approach, and coeducation.

Recognition and payment

Recognized centers will receive an accreditation plaque and, if budget availability permits, financial aid, the amount of which will be determined in each annual call. The maximum period for resolution and notification will be six months from the publication of the call summary, and payment will be made via transfer in a single payment within an estimated period of three months.

The order, which adheres to the principles of good regulation and has received a favorable report from the School Council of the Principality of Asturias, represents a significant step for the promotion and conservation of the Asturian and Eonaviego languages in the educational sphere, by publicly recognizing the effort of the centers that promote their teaching and dissemination.
