Aragón allocates 195,000 euros to patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in nursing homes

Aragón destina 195.000 euros a enfermos de esclerosis lateral amiotrófica en residencias

The Government of Aragon has created, for the first time, a line of individual grants intended for people affected by advanced-stage amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who are admitted to residential centers. This is done through Order DBF/1575/2026, of October 27, published in the Official Gazette of Aragon number 211, of October 30, 2026 (reference BOA20261030001), which approves the regulatory bases and the call for applications for 2026 within a single file. The call is endowed with 195,000 euros and sets a grant of 9,859 euros per beneficiary.

The regulation is signed by the Vice President and Councilor for Deregulation, Social Welfare, and Family, Alejandro Nolasco Asensio, and is aimed at a group that until now lacked specific coverage. The text itself justifies the measure on the grounds that the personal care expenses required by the disease “are not covered by the residential care they receive nor by the financial benefits of the System for Autonomy and Care for Dependency.” The order is based on the modification of the Department’s Strategic Subsidy Plan for 2024-2027, approved by Order of October 9, 2026, and the joint processing of the bases and the call responds, according to the BOA, to the urgency demanded by the attention to these needs.

Requirements: Advanced ALS and permanent residence

Persons who can prove the following situation on the date of publication of the call may be beneficiaries:

  • Being diagnosed with ALS.
  • Presenting severe muscle weakness in the upper and lower limbs.
  • Requiring continuous mechanical ventilatory support, invasive or non-invasive, for a minimum of 16 hours per day.
  • Needing support due to poor secretion management and inability to cough.
  • Being registered in any municipality of the Autonomous Community of Aragon.
  • Being permanently admitted to a residential center.

The grant is compatible with other subsidies, income, or aid for the same purpose coming from public administrations or private entities, whether national or European.

9,859 euros per person and a deadline of ten business days

The individual amount is set at 9,859 euros, with a global maximum of 195,000 euros allocated in the 2026 budget of the Aragonese Institute of Social Services (IASS), under budget application G/3132/480159/91002. If the credit is insufficient for all applications that meet the requirements, a linear downward pro-rata will be applied; if there is surplus credit, it will be pro-rated upward, provided that the individual amount does not exceed 19,718 euros. With the current allocation, the credit covers approximately twenty files.

The submission period is ten business days from the day following the publication, through the procedure identified with procedure number 12010 on the electronic office of the Government of Aragon, or in person at the registration units. The required documentation is:

  • Application addressed to the Management Directorate of the IASS.
  • Report from a specialist in pulmonology or neurology certifying ALS in an advanced stage.
  • Certificate of census registration (empadronamiento).
  • Certificate of residence in the residential center, including the date of admission.
  • Third-party form for the payment of the aid.

The extract of the call is published in section V of announcements of the same BOA, with the identification BDNS 934273 in the National Grants Database (reference BOA20261030026).

Who resolves and how it is controlled

The procedure is a simplified competitive process and is instructed by the Center Network Management and Social Initiative Promotion Service of the Management Directorate of the IASS. The resolution corresponds to the Management Directorate of the organization, which has a maximum period of one month from the end of the application period; if there is no express resolution, the requests are understood to be rejected. The resolution will be published in the BOA for notification purposes and does not require express acceptance.

The grants require no further justification than accrediting the situation that motivates the award, although the IASS will carry out a field control on 10% of the amount effectively paid. An optional appeal for reversal may be filed against the order before the counselor or, directly, a contentious-administrative appeal before the High Court of Justice of Aragon.

The impact of the measure is twofold: it provides an economic response to families facing continuous care expenses and recognizes, via budget, institutionalized people with advanced ALS, a group that remained outside the ordinary benefits of the dependency system. The amount is fixed and compatible with other aids, so it is added to, and does not replace, the resources already received by those affected and the centers that care for them throughout the community.
