A Xunta amplía a época de perigo alto de incendios en outubro

The General Directorate of Forest Defense has extended the high-risk period for forest fires in Galicia until October 31, 2026, fifteen days more than established by the previous extension. The decision, signed by the general director Manuel Francisco Gutiérrez, is contained in the Resolution of October 9, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) no. 195, of October 14, in section III. Other provisions, with the official reference CVE-DOG: xbrvkai4-irb4-w4x4-oss9-qu4dzfncpqs2.

The measure is based on Article 9 of Law 3/2007, of April 9, on the prevention and defense against forest fires in Galicia, which attributes to the department competent in forestry matters the definition of the high-risk period and the dates that delimit it. According to the text of the resolution itself, this period determines the intensity of the measures adopted for the defense of the Galician territory.

The initial calendar was established by the Order of June 5, 2026 (DOG no. 108, of June 11), which declared the dates between July 1 and September 30 as the high-risk period. The final first provision of that order empowered the general director of Forest Defense to issue the precise instructions to modify those dates and declare other times of the year as high-risk when meteorological conditions or other circumstances aggravated the risk of fires.

A three-step extension

The first extension came with the Resolution of September 22, 2026 (DOG no. 182, of September 24), which extended the high-risk period from October 1 to 15 “due to current meteorological conditions.” The new resolution, of October 9, adds fifteen more days and sets the limit on October 31.

The text signed in Santiago de Compostela introduces no changes in procedure: it maintains the same meteorological argument and the same regulatory authorization from the June order. The resolution is included in the other provisions section of the bulletin, within the Department of Rural Affairs.

What the declaration implies

  • The high-risk period determines the intensity of the territory’s defense measures against forest fires.
  • The competence to set and modify the dates corresponds to the department with competencies in forestry matters.
  • The authorization to issue instructions and declare other high-risk periods falls to the general director of Forest Defense.
  • The extension covers the period between October 16 and October 31, 2026.

Chronology of the 2026 campaign

  • July 1 - September 30: high-risk period established by the Order of June 5, 2026 (DOG no. 108, of June 11).
  • October 1 - 15: first extension, by the Resolution of September 22, 2026 (DOG no. 182, of September 24).
  • October 16 - 31: second extension, by the Resolution of October 9, 2026 (DOG no. 195, of October 14).

The extension affects the entire Galician rural area during the second half of October, a period in which weather conditions continue to aggravate the risk of fire. The publication in the DOG provides official coverage for the surveillance and prevention measures that remain active until the end of the month, with the general director of Mountain Defense as the competent authority to further extend the deadline if the situation requires it.
