Volda opens deer hunting to thermal and night-vision sights

Volda municipality has opened deer hunting in open terrain to image-intensifying (restlysforsterkande) and thermal sights, a decision adopted by the municipal council on 20 August 2026. The regulation was published in Norsk Lovtidend on 24 August 2026 as 20.08.2026 nr. 1664 and enters into force on 31 August 2026.
The measure is aimed at hunters in Møre og Romsdal and is issued under the authority of section 29a of the national regulation of 22 March 2002 nr. 313 on the practice of hunting, shooting and trapping.
What the regulation allows
Under section 1, hunters may now use image-intensifying and thermal sights when hunting deer (hjort) in open terrain within Volda municipality. The permission is extended beyond open terrain for the specific task of tracking down wounded deer (ettersøk av påskoten hjort), where the same sights may also be used.

Reporting obligation
Section 2 introduces a reporting duty for hunters who use these sights. Any hunter who fells a deer using image-intensifying or thermal sights must report the use in the Hjorteviltregisteret, the national register for cervid game.
The reporting requirement applies specifically at the moment of felling a deer, ensuring that the use of the newly permitted equipment is documented and traceable.
Legal basis and entry into force
The regulation was adopted by the Volda municipal council on 20 August 2026 as case 54/26, with legal basis in section 29a of the hunting regulation of 22 March 2002 nr. 313. It is published in Avd. II (regional and local regulations) of Norsk Lovtidend, announced on 24 August 2026 at 14.45.
Section 3 sets the entry into force date at 31 August 2026, meaning the new rules apply from the start of the autumn hunting season for deer in the municipality.
For local hunters in Møre og Romsdal, the change removes a previous restriction on modern sighting equipment, while the reporting duty keeps the practice under official oversight through the Hjorteviltregisteret.
