Tongyeong naval command site expanded with four new historic parcels

The Korea Heritage Service has added four parcels totalling 392 square metres to the historic site Tongyeong Samdosugun Tongjeyeong (the Three Provinces Naval Command Headquarters) in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, to preserve and manage the ground where the Yeongricheong and other Dongheon-related facilities once stood. The additional designation was announced in Notice No. 2026-0110 of the Korea Heritage Service, published in the Republic of Korea Official Gazette (Gwanbo) issue No. 21319 of 10 September 2026.

The measure extends the protected area of a site that already holds the status of a designated Historic Site (sajeok). Under the Cultural Heritage Act (Articles 25 and 28), the service formally notified the additional designation and, in line with Article 8 of the Framework Act on the Regulation of Land Use, published the accompanying topographic maps for public inspection.

Scope of the additional designation

The newly added land lies in the Sebyeong-ro 27 area of Tongyeong, on the site and surroundings where the Yeongricheong and other Dongheon-related facilities of the naval command were historically located. The four parcels are:

• Tongyeong-si Taepyeong-dong 688 (road land, 113㎡, owned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport)
• Tongyeong-si Taepyeong-dong 211 (building land, 135㎡)
• Tongyeong-si Taepyeong-dong 209-1 (building land, 73㎡)
• Tongyeong-si Taepyeong-dong 207-7 (building land, 71㎡, owned by Tongyeong City)

The managing body for the expanded site is Tongyeong City (the city mayor), Gyeongsangnam-do. The designation takes effect on the date of publication in the Official Gazette.

Why it matters

The Tongyeong Samdosugun Tongjeyeong was the headquarters of the naval command that oversaw the three southern provinces during the Joseon dynasty, a site of deep historical and regional significance. By folding the former Yeongricheong and Dongheon-related grounds into the protected historic area, the designation shields the archaeological footprint of the command’s administrative core from development and secures it for conservation and future research. For Tongyeong residents, the move reinforces the city’s standing as a centre of maritime heritage and supports the long-term preservation of one of the region’s most important cultural assets.
