Tenerife approves the environmental declaration of the Insular Sustainable Mobility Plan

The Tenerife Environmental Evaluation Commission (CEAT) has formulated the Strategic Environmental Statement corresponding to the Tenerife Insular Sustainable Mobility Plan (PIMSIT), a decisive step for the organization of mobility across the entire island. The agreement was adopted in the ordinary session held on August 11, 2026, as the third item on the agenda, and its announcement is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, number 99, dated August 19, 2026.

The statement is conditional upon compliance with the additional environmental criteria indicated in section 6 of the agreement, as well as the provisions of the Strategic Environmental Study and compliance with the Monitoring Plan, with the modifications defined in section 7 of the same agreement.

Bodies and promoter of the plan

The planning instrument is promoted by the Insular Council of Tenerife through its Insular Department of Mobility, which acts as the promoter. The substantive body is the Insular Council of Tenerife itself, while the competent environmental body is the Tenerife Environmental Evaluation Commission, attached to the Council.

Conditions of the statement

The Strategic Environmental Statement is not unconditional: its formulation requires compliance with a series of additional environmental criteria collected in section 6 of the agreement. To this are added the determinations of the Strategic Environmental Study and the requirements of the Monitoring Plan, with the modifications specified in section 7 of the agreement.

These conditions ensure that the development of the PIMSIT aligns with the sustainability and environmental protection objectives of the island, integrating the environmental variable into mobility planning.

The announcement, electronically signed on August 13, 2026, by the secretary of the Commission, Mª Noemí Martín González, allows citizens and interested entities to access the full content of the agreement and learn about the environmental conditions that will govern the execution of the plan.

Relevance for the island

The formulation of this environmental statement represents a key milestone for mobility in Tenerife, as it clears the environmental procedure that conditions the final approval of the PIMSIT. With this, the Cabildo moves toward a more sustainable insular transport model, in which the protection of the territory and the reduction of environmental impact are integrated as binding criteria in the mobility planning for the entire island.
