Tarancón submits a BESS battery system for public consultation

Por FactBox Admin

The Tarancón City Council (Cuenca) has agreed to submit to public information the urban classification as reserve rustic land of an estate in polygon 501, where an electrical storage system with batteries (BESS) is planned to be installed. The announcement, signed by Mayor José López Carrizo on 17 July 2026, is published in the Official Gazette of Castilla-La Mancha (DOCM) number 155, of 14 August 2026, with reference [2026/5574]. For twenty days, residents and interested parties may consult the file and submit allegations.

The file affects two cadastral plots classified as reserve rustic land, with a combined area of 18,284 m², and the requested use is private community facilities: a BESS-type battery storage installation (Battery Energy Storage System). The procedure is carried out in accordance with the regional urban planning regulations of Castilla-La Mancha, which regulate the implementation of community facility uses on non-developable land.

A storage installation on 18,284 m²

The estate subject to the urban classification is located in the municipality of Tarancón and comprises two plots with the following characteristics:

  • Cadastral reference: 16212A501003360000KJ and 16212A501003320000KR
  • Location: polygon 501, plots 336 and 332
  • Land class: reserve rustic land
  • Total area: 18,284 m² (10,107 m² + 8,177 m²)
  • Occupied area: 44.31 m²
  • Intended use: private community facilities, storage battery installation (BESS system)

Twenty days to submit allegations

The file is subject to public information for a period of twenty days, counted from the day following the publication of the announcement in the DOCM, in accordance with article 64.5 of Legislative Decree 1/2023, of 28 February, approving the Consolidated Text of the Law on Land Use Planning and Urban Activity of Castilla-La Mancha, and article 43.5 of Decree 242/2004, of 27 July, approving the Rustic Land Regulations.

During the entire information period, the endorsed project will be deposited for public consultation at the premises of the municipality affected by the planning to be established, as well as on the City Council’s electronic office (tarancon.sedelectronica.es). At both points, any observations and allegations deemed pertinent may be submitted.

A key procedure for energy storage in the region

The planning qualification is the instrument that enables private community facility uses on rural land and constitutes a prior and indispensable administrative step for the commissioning of the installation. Battery storage systems such as the one planned allow electrical energy to be stored and released when demand or the system requires it, an infrastructure that is increasingly relevant for the integration of renewables into the grid.

With the opening of this participation period, the Tarancón City Council offers the public the opportunity to learn about the project and make their views known before the requested qualification is resolved. The final resolution, once the procedure has concluded, will determine whether the installation can be installed on polygon 501 in the Cuenca locality.
