Subtel authorizes Claro Chile radio link to expand network in La Araucanía

The Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) modified the Intermediate Telecommunications Service concession of the company Claro Chile SpA, authorizing it to install, operate, and exploit a point-to-point radio link in the La Araucanía Region. The decision was formalized through exempt decree No. 833, dated August 5, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Chile No. 44,552, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in Section II of Particular Regulations.

The authorization expands the concessionaire’s connectivity in the commune of Ercilla, within the framework of the General Telecommunications Law and current sectoral regulations.

Scope of the modification

The decree modifies the concession originally granted through supreme decree No. 179 of 1988, transferred to its current holder by exempt decree No. 538 of 2020, both from the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications. The request was submitted by the concessionaire under Subtel entry No. 15,618 of 09.02.2026, and no oppositions were presented to its publication in abstract.

The authorized radio link connects two stations in the commune of Ercilla:

• Pillanlelbun, at Lote 6, San Ramón Sector, Route S-947 km 1, with a frequency of 14.893 MHz.
• Cº Pailahueque, at Cerro Pailahueque, with a frequency of 15.313 MHz.

Both stations operate with a gain of 41.1 dBi, power of 0.398 W, emission type 56M0D7W, and vertical polarization, in stage 1.

Infrastructure and deadlines

The link will rely on previously authorized existing infrastructure, upon which the radiating systems will be co-located:

• San Ramón Ercilla, authorized by exempt decree No. 452 of 2016 (support code 21868).
• Cº Pailahueque, authorized by supreme decree No. 178 of 2012 (support code 11051).

The radio link will be implemented through its own means or those of duly authorized third parties. The deadlines, referring to the date of publication of the decree in the Official Gazette, are as follows:

• Start of works: 1 month.
• Completion of works: 23 months.
• Start of service: 24 months.

Obligations of the concessionaire

The decree approves the base technical project presented by the company, whose documentation will be archived at the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications. The concessionaire is obliged to be aware of and comply with the legal, regulatory, and technical provisions governing telecommunications, and the authorization is subject to the payment of fees for the use of the radio spectrum.

The act was issued by order of the President of the Republic by the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Louis de Grange Concha, and transcribed by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Romina Garrido Iglesias.

The expansion of the Claro Chile network in La Araucanía reinforces the coverage of intermediate telecommunications services in a rural area of the region, a relevant step toward bringing connectivity to communities that have historically had less access to data transport infrastructure.
