Siquirres calls for plebiscite to convert Reventazón into a district government

The Siquirres Municipal Council has called upon the inhabitants of the canton for a plebiscite to determine whether the Reventazón district becomes a District Municipal Council (Intendancy). The voting will take place on Sunday, February 28, 2027, from 09:00 to 17:00 hours, and the result will be binding for the Municipal Council. The call was published in La Gaceta No. 182 on Monday, September 28, 2026, under official reference IN202601129207.

The call was signed by the Secretariat of the Municipal Council, led by MSc. Dinorah Cubillo Ortiz, and appears on pages 86 and 87 of the official gazette, within the Municipal Regime section. The notice is ordered to be published once, as stated at the bottom of the official text.

The process has a total budget of ¢28,000,000.00 (twenty-eight million colones), included in the Extraordinary Budget 1-2026, approved by the Municipal Council in agreement No. 2873 of Ordinary Session No. 101 on April 7, 2026, and endorsed by the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR) via official letter No. 07184 on June 11, 2026, DFOE-LOC-0792.

This is not the first publication of the same process: a previous call appeared in La Gaceta on August 28, 2026 (reference IN202601120888) with the voting set for Sunday, November 22, 2026. The notice now published moves the date to February 28, 2027.

The question voters will answer

The official text submits a single question for consultation: “Do you agree that the Reventazón District becomes a District Municipal Council (Intendancy)?”, with YES and NO boxes to mark.

For the creation of the District Municipal Council to be considered approved, the call requires two simultaneous conditions:

• The support of at least fifteen percent (15%) of the registered voters in the canton.
• That the YES votes exceed the NO votes.

Date, time, and scope of the result

• Date of the plebiscite: Sunday, February 28, 2027.
• Opening hours of the polling stations: 09:00 to 17:00 hours.
• Effect of the result: as it is a plebiscite, it will be binding for the Municipal Council.

Already approved financing

The amount of ¢28,000,000.00 allocated to the process already has budgetary backing and the endorsement of the CGR, which enables the organization of the consultation on the set date. The budget is contained in the Extraordinary Budget 1-2026 and was approved by the Municipal Council itself in April 2026, with the approval of DFOE-LOC-0792.

The decision rests in the hands of the entire electorate of the canton of Siquirres, not only the Reventazón district, and its result will be binding for the Municipal Council. If the consultation is approved, the Reventazón District Municipal Council (Intendancy) would be created, under the exact terms of the call published in the official gazette.
