Sergio Melián Batista, new president of the Economic and Social Council of the Canary Islands

The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo Batlle, has appointed Sergio Melián Batista as president of the Economic and Social Council of the Canary Islands. The appointment is formalized through Decree 85/2026, of August 26, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands number 174, on Monday, August 31, 2026, in the Appointments, situations, and incidents section of the Presidency of the Government.

The decree stems from the agreement adopted by the Economic and Social Council in its constitutive session held on August 24, 2026, and is issued in accordance with Article 12.1 of Law 1/1992, of April 27, of the Economic and Social Council, and Article 17 of Decree 100/1992, of June 26, which approves its implementing Regulations.

A key body for social dialogue

The Economic and Social Council of the Canary Islands is the advisory and consulting body of the regional Government on socio-economic and labor matters. Its function is to channel the participation of social and economic agents in the development of public policies for the archipelago, issuing opinions and reports on the most significant regulatory projects.

The designation of its president is decisive for the functioning of the body, as it is their responsibility to direct its work, represent it, and ensure the balance between the different interests represented within it.

Regulatory framework of the appointment

The procedure is based on a dual legal foundation:

• Article 12.1 of Law 1/1992, of April 27, which regulates the composition and appointment regime of the Council’s presidency.
• Article 17 of Decree 100/1992, of June 26, which regulatorily develops the designation procedure.

The decree, signed in the Canary Islands on August 26, 2026, enters into force upon its publication in the official gazette, beginning the mandate of Sergio Melián Batista at the head of the advisory body.

Relevance for the Canarian economy

The renewal of the presidency of the Economic and Social Council comes at a time when the archipelago faces challenges such as productive diversification, energy transition, and the improvement of the labor market. The new president must promote dialogue between trade unions, employers, and the administration to accompany these transformations.

With this appointment, the Government of the Canary Islands renews the leadership of one of the main forums for social concertation in the autonomous community, whose opinions guide the economic and labor decisions that directly affect citizens and companies in the islands.
