Rianxo approves the twinning with the Pontevedra municipality of A Estrada

The Plenary of the Rianxo City Council, in the session of February 26, 2026, approved the twinning between the municipalities of A Estrada (Pontevedra) and Rianxo (A Coruña), with the objective of strengthening the cultural, historical, and social ties between both localities. The agreement, signed by Mayor Julián Bustelo Abuín, was published in the Official Gazette of the Province of A Coruña on September 11, 2026, with the official reference 2026/5833.

A historical and cultural bond

The twinning is based on the existing historical and cultural bond between both localities following the romantic union between Alfonso Daniel Manuel Rodríguez Castelao and Virxinia Pereira Renda. The couple married on October 19, 1912, and had a son, Alfonso Xesús, who died very young as a result of an illness.

Both suffered the consequences of the 1936 Coup d’État and exile, where Castelao died in 1950. From then until her death, Virxinia fought to ensure that his legacy reached our days alive. The union between A Estrada and Rianxo will allow for the implementation of joint actions and activities aimed at disseminating the work carried out by this couple, who were so transcendental in contemporary Galician history.

An instrument of cooperation

According to the agreement, the twinning of municipalities is an instrument of institutional cooperation that promotes cultural, social, and economic exchange, reinforcing a common identity and promoting collaboration in various fields of mutual interest. Currently, Rianxo is already twinned with other councils, which favors fluid collaboration channels between institutions and the consideration of the citizenry.

The agreements adopted by the Plenary were as follows:

• First. To approve the twinning between the municipalities of A Estrada (Pontevedra) and Rianxo (A Coruña), with the purpose of strengthening the cultural, historical, and social ties between both localities, promoting joint initiatives that favor mutual knowledge and the development of projects of common interest.
• Second. To forward the agreement to the city council of A Estrada (Pontevedra) for the purpose of institutionally formalizing the twinning.
• Third. To publish the agreement in the Official Gazette of the Province and on the Notice Board for public knowledge.

An axis of exchange

The twinning will allow for the development of increasingly closer bonds of friendship between both localities, within a perspective of cooperation. The collaboration channels between institutions will be enormously fluid, as well as the consideration of the citizens of the involved municipalities, which constitute an axis of cultural, economic, and leisure exchange.

The union of Estrada and Rianxo represents a relevant step for the joint dissemination of the legacy of Castelao and Virxinia Pereira, two central figures in the contemporary history of Galicia. For readers, this agreement reinforces historical memory and opens new avenues of collaboration between two regions that share a common heritage, with projects of mutual interest that will benefit the citizens of both localities.
