Recovery of the Naredo River in Lena is open for public consultation

The Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation (O.A.) has submitted for public review the hydromorphological recovery project for a section of the Naredo river in the municipality of Lena (Asturias), along with the list of assets and rights subject to necessary occupation. The announcement is published in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias number 161, dated August 20, 2026, and opens a period of twenty business days for affected parties to submit allegations.

A project to return the river to its natural state

The action, authorized by a resolution from the Director General of Water dated July 20, 2026, corresponds to key 01.499-0097/2111. The works will run between Pola de Lena and the urban centers of Palaciós and Piedracea, and will end in the natural environment of the Ermita de la Flor.

The main objective is the hydromorphological recovery of the riverbed, for which the following is planned:

• Resolve the existence of wastewater discharges.
• Remedy discontinuities in the riparian forest and protect the banks.
• Remove rigid linings and review hydraulic capacity.
• Eliminate obstructions in the riverbed.
• Adapt the existing path and create new routes.
• Create a river park.

Dozens of affected owners

The annex of the announcement includes the list of affected assets and rights, with 77 properties distributed between polygon 45 and other cadastral plots. Alongside public holders—the Lena City Council, the Railway Infrastructure Administrator (ADIF), the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation itself, the Principality of Asturias, and the Nursing Home—are listed dozens of private owners, including Berta and Marta Blanco García, Isabel Ortiz Aza, Silvino Mallada Prada, Araceli Fernández Prieto, José Luis Fernández Martínez, Francisco Suárez Tuñón, and the heirs of Francisco Fernández Cienfuegos, Emilia López Suárez, and Victorino Ronzón Tuñón, among others.

The affected area varies by property, with definitive expropriations, aqueduct easements, and temporary occupations that in some cases exceed 4,000 square meters.

Twenty days to submit allegations

The file and the project will be on display at the offices of the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation, at La Regenta Street, 21-23, 33006, Oviedo, as well as in the offices of the Lena City Council. The documentation will also be available at the link https://www.chcantabrico.es/anuncios_notificaciones.

Allegations may be submitted within a period of twenty business days, counted from the date of the last of the publications of the announcement in the Official State Gazette and in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias, and must be addressed to the Confederation and the City Council of Lena through any of the means provided for in Article 16.4 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations.

An environmental change with neighborhood impact

The recovery of the Naredo river will result in an environmental and landscape improvement for the fluvial environment of Pola de Lena, but it will also affect the rights of dozens of owners whose properties will be expropriated or temporarily occupied. The public information period is, therefore, the opportunity for residents to learn the exact scope of the works and defend their interests before the project is definitively approved.
