Quintana del Castillo begins the closure of the old cemetery of La Veguellina

The City Council of Quintana del Castillo has agreed, by Mayoral Resolution, to initiate the administrative process for the closure of the Old Cemetery of La Veguellina de Cepeda and its conditioning as a memorial space. The announcement is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of León, number 177, dated September 16, 2026, with official reference BOP-LE-2026-177008, and opens a three-month public information period for interested parties to submit allegations.
The process is being handled at the request of the Neighborhood Board of La Veguellina de Cepeda, in accordance with the provisions of Article 46 of Decree 21/2025, of December 18, which regulates mortuary sanitary police in the Community of Castilla y León. The agreement, signed by the mayor-president Manuel Menendez Omaña on September 14, 2026, aims both to close the site and to adopt the necessary measures for its transformation into a memorial space, according to the documentation submitted by the Neighborhood Board.
A cemetery becoming a space of remembrance
The project involves the comprehensive adaptation of the old graveyard to preserve the memory of the people buried there. The planned actions, according to the official announcement, include the cleaning and conditioning of the land and its heritage elements:
- Removal of existing vegetation and weeds.
- Removal and conditioning of stones from the collapsed wall.
- Leveling and conditioning of the terrain.
- Execution of a concrete slab over the existing base.
- Maintenance or restoration of the cross.
- Installation of a plaque in memory of the people buried there.
- Planting of two shade trees.
- Placement of two benches.
- Landscaping with flowers in the perimeter area.
Three months of public information
In accordance with Article 46.2 of Decree 21/2025, the measures planned for the closure are subject to public information for a period of three months, starting from the day following the publication of the announcement in the Official Gazette of the Province of León. During this period, any interested person may examine the file and formulate the allegations, observations, or contributions they deem appropriate.
The file may be consulted at the offices of the City Council of Quintana del Castillo, upon request. Allegations may be submitted through any of the means provided for in Article 16.4 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations.
A process with neighborhood participation
The initiative originates from the Junta Vecinal de La Veguellina de Cepeda itself, which has promoted the transformation of the old cemetery into a dignified space for remembrance and community gathering. The closure is being processed under the regional framework of mortuary sanitary police, which regulates the fate of cemeteries that cease to provide burial services.
The resolution is made public for general knowledge and for the purposes provided for in the applicable regulations, with the period for submitting allegations now open to all residents and persons with a legitimate interest in the process.
