Poland allows soldiers to wear equivalent uniform items

The Minister of National Defence of Poland has amended the rules on the wearing of uniforms by soldiers, allowing them to use items of uniform and military equipment whose characteristics are equivalent to the official patterns. The change was published in Dziennik Ustaw on 3 September 2026 as item poz. 1172, in a regulation dated 1 September 2026.
The new rules take effect the day after publication and amend the regulation of 20 May 2022 on the wearing of uniforms by soldiers (Dz.U. poz. 1237, as amended).
What the amendment allows
The core change adds a new point 9 to § 24 of the 2022 regulation. It permits soldiers, while carrying out official duties, to wear items of uniform and military equipment recommended by the Minister of National Defence that have characteristics equivalent to those of the items in the uniform to which the soldier is entitled, even where they differ from the specified patterns.
The permission applies to the following types of uniform:
- field uniform (ubiór polowy)
- training uniform (ubiór ćwiczebny)
- special uniform (ubiór specjalny)
- sports uniform (ubiór sportowy)
A public list of approved items
A new § 24a obliges the Minister of National Defence to make public the list of items covered by the new provision. This gives soldiers and commanders a clear, official reference for which equivalent items may be worn in service.
The regulation is based on Article 270(2), points 1–3 of the Act of 11 March 2022 on the Defence of the Homeland (Dz.U. 2025 poz. 825, as amended). It was signed on behalf of the minister by P. Bejda.
Impact on daily service
By allowing equivalent items alongside the standard patterns, the measure is intended to ease the practical burden of equipping soldiers and to accommodate equipment that meets the same functional standards without being identical to the official models. The requirement that the minister publish the list keeps the system transparent and subject to central control.
