Oviedo launches an Erasmus Mundus master's degree in sustainable transport and energy

The Governing Council of the Principality of Asturias has authorized the implementation at the University of Oviedo of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Sustainable Transport and Electric Power Systems, an official international degree taught alongside universities from Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The decision is detailed in the Agreement of September 7, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA) number 178, dated September 15, 2026, with code 2026-07507.

The agreement, adopted upon the proposal of the Councilor for Science, Industry, and Employment, Borja Sánchez García, expands the international academic offering of the Asturian institution. The University of Oviedo submitted its authorization request on March 13, 2026, after completing internal procedures and the external verification of the curriculum.

A university consortium of four countries

The new master’s degree will be taught jointly by an international consortium consisting of four institutions:

• University of Oviedo (Spain)
• Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (Portugal)
• The University of Nottingham (United Kingdom)
• Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza” (Italy)

As it is a degree with the Erasmus Mundus label, the curriculum was evaluated and selected by the European Commission through a competitive call, granting it international recognition.

A long administrative journey

The authorization culminates a process initiated months earlier:

• The Governing Council of the University of Oviedo approved the proposal on March 2, 2026.
• The university’s Social Council issued a favorable report on March 11, 2026.
• The Curriculum Verification and Accreditation Commission of the Council of Universities issued a positive verification resolution on June 18, 2026.

The agreement stipulates that the start of teaching will require a new authorization from the Department of Science, Industry, and Employment, which will determine the academic year of implementation.

Regulatory framework

The implementation is based on Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, on the University System, which promotes the internationalization of academic offerings, and Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which regulates the organization of university education. The Eighth Additional Provision of this royal decree recognizes that degrees with the Erasmus Mundus label have a favorable verification report. Decree 90/2009, of July 29, on Official University Education and Centers of the Principality of Asturias, completes the applicable regional framework.

With this authorization, the University of Oviedo reinforces its international projection and its commitment to strategic areas such as sustainable mobility and energy transition. The new master’s degree will allow Asturian students to train in a multinational European environment and will attract foreign talent to the Principality, in line with the regional policy to promote university education.
