Ontario Gazette Confirms Three New Members Elected to Legislative Assembly

The Chief Electoral Officer of Ontario, Greg Essensa, has declared three new members elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario. The declaration is published as a Parliamentary Notice, under the heading Return of Members, in La Gazette de l’Ontario, Vol. 159-38, of Saturday, 19 September 2026, with official reference (159-G131E).

The notice gives formal notice of the receipt of the Return of the Members to represent the electoral districts listed in the Legislative Assembly. It is dated at Toronto on 8 September 2026 and signed by Greg Essensa in his capacity as Chief Electoral Officer. The issue is published by the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and carries the copyright of the King’s Printer for Ontario, 2026.

The Return of Members is the instrument by which the province’s electoral authority certifies the result of a vote and confirms who will sit for each electoral district. The three declarations carried in this issue change the seat composition of the Legislative Assembly and settle the representation of the ridings concerned, placing the outcome of each contest on the province’s public record.

The three members declared elected

The notice lists three electoral districts and the member returned for each:

• Jeff Beattie, for electoral district 037, Hamilton East—Stoney Creek (Hamilton-Est—Stoney Creek).
• Fatima Shaban, for electoral district 098, Scarborough Southwest (Scarborough-Sud-Ouest).
• Susan Lahey, for electoral district 121, York—Simcoe.

Each entry is printed in the gazette’s bilingual format, pairing the English district name and member name with the French equivalent.

The ridings affected

The three ridings cover different parts of the province: Hamilton East—Stoney Creek in the Hamilton area, Scarborough Southwest in eastern Toronto, and York—Simcoe to the north of the Greater Toronto Area. Each is identified by its official electoral district number — 037, 098 and 121 — as well as by name, so that the return can be matched to the corresponding constituency. The notice does not record vote totals or margins; it records only the district and the member returned for it.

The official record

The Return of Members opens the issue as its Parliamentary Notice, on page 2395. The same issue also carries the Election Finances Act Guidelines effective January 2026, issued by the Chief Electoral Officer, which replace all previous guidelines published in the gazette before that date and describe the general approach to matters governed by the Election Finances Act. The guidelines state that they are not intended to constitute a binding statement of how the Chief Electoral Officer will exercise discretion in every matter, and that where a conflict exists between the guidelines and the Election Finances Act, the Act prevails.

With the Return of Members now published, the three ridings have confirmed representation in the Legislative Assembly and the province’s seat composition is updated accordingly. Publication in the gazette gives the declarations their official public record and fixes the date from which the new members’ mandates are documented.
