Por FactBox Admin

The City Council of A Coruña is calling for approximately 30 grants to study the 1st year of baccalaureate in Canada during the 2027/2028 school year, as part of the program A Coruña en el Mundo: North America Scholarships 2027-2028. The call is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of A Coruña (BOP) no. 189, dated October 2, 2026, under announcement number 2026/6331, and derives from the agreement of the Local Government Board on September 2, 2026, which approved the admission bases of the program.
The publication is made as an extract of the call, in accordance with the provisions of articles 17.3.b and 20.8.a of Law 38/2003, of November 17, general law on subsidies, and the full text can be consulted in the National Subsidy Database with the identifier BDNS 932089. The call is governed by the Municipal Ordinance of general regulatory bases for the granting of subsidies by the City Council of A Coruña and its public bodies, published in BOP no. 157 on August 16, 2024, and, where applicable, by Law 9/2007, of June 13, on subsidies in Galicia.
Requirements to apply for the grant
The grants are intended for students enrolled in 4th year of ESO during the 2026/2027 course in educational centers within the municipal district of A Coruña. Applicants must prove at the time of application:
- To reside and be registered (empadronadas) in the city of A Coruña with the mother, father, or legal representative since at least January 1, 2025, with a valid residence until at least June 30, 2028.
- To be in possession of a DNI (NIF) or NIE, both in force; in the event of being a beneficiary, a valid passport must be provided for the visa, a procedure planned for April or May 2027.
- To have had an average grade of 7 points or more in 3rd year of ESO and have no failed subjects.
- To have 7 points or more in the foreign language subject (English) in 3rd year of ESO.
- Not to be subject to the prohibitions for obtaining beneficiary status set out in Law 9/2007, a requirement that is verified only in the event of an award.
All conditions must be maintained from the date of application until the end of the program, set for June 30, 2028.
Amount and family contribution
The estimated funding for the provision of services for the management of these grants amounts to 648,723.11 euros, charged to budget application 60.326.227.35, although the final amount is subject to the availability of the municipal budget. The grants are grants-in-kind and the final number will depend on the tender for the program management services contract; a total of 30 is estimated, which will be specified in the final resolution.
Participation does not imply total gratuity. Families with a score of 4 or lower regarding the economic situation of the family unit (per capita income) shall contribute the corresponding amounts:
- Per capita income from 0.00 to 13,500.00 euros: 0% family contribution.
- From 13,500.01 to 15,000.00 euros: 5%.
- From 15,000.01 to 16,500.00 euros: 10%.
- From 16,500.01 to 18,000.00 euros: 15%.
- From 18,000.01 to 19,500.00 euros: 20%.
- From 19,500.01 euros onwards: 25%.
Deadline, assessment and conditions
The deadline for submitting applications is 15 business days starting from the day following the publication of the summary in the BOP of A Coruña. Applications, together with the complementary documentation, are submitted at the municipal registry or in any of the places established in article 16.4 of Law 39/2012, of October 1, on the common administrative procedure.
The assessment is carried out under a competitive bidding regime and results from the sum of the score obtained in four blocks: the average grade of 3rd year of ESO, the final English grade of 3rd year of ESO, the economic situation of the nuclear family unit, and the socio-family situation. The granting is conditional upon the beneficiary passing all 4th year ESO subjects in June, certifying the regulations regarding the departure of minors abroad, and having the documentation for the visa, as well as the existence of a host home. In the case of people with disabilities, the City Council may offer an alternative or reasonable adjustment to ensure equality during the stay in Canada.
The aid is also subject to restrictions or requirements that may prevent the development of the program or advise its suspension for reasons of public health and protection of minors, and the granting of the visa or study permit by the Canadian authorities. The summary is signed by the councilor secretary of the Local Government Board, José Manuel Lage Tuñas.
The call opens an international mobility route for families from A Coruña with children in 4th year of ESO, who can complete the first year of baccalaureate in a Canadian center with a financial contribution that depends on the per capita income of the household. The deadline of 15 business days from publication means that interested families must urgently gather documentation regarding census registration, identity, and academic records to compete in the process.
