María Irene Díaz Martínez appointed as titular justice of the peace of Ribadeo

The Commission of the Governing Chamber of the High Court of Justice of Galicia has agreed to appoint María Irene Díaz Martínez as the titular justice of the peace of Ribadeo for a period of four years. The appointment is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Lugo (BOP) no. 218, dated September 23, 2026, in the Justice Administration section, with the official reference R. 2511. The decision was adopted because the Ribadeo City Council did not elect any person to hold the position in due time.

The agreement of the Governing Chamber

The appointment was agreed upon at the meeting of the Commission of the Governing Chamber of the TSXG held on July 23, 2026, which resolved to fill the positions of titular and substitute justices of the peace in the municipalities of the Autonomous Community that had not been filled by the local corporations. The designation is made directly from among the participants in the competition convened to fill those positions, without the need for a new municipal call.

Deadlines for taking office

The appointed person must take office at the judicial office of the municipality for which they were designated and before whoever is exercising jurisdiction. The deadline is 20 calendar days starting from the day following the publication of the appointment in the corresponding provincial gazette.

Before assuming the position, they must take an oath or promise before the judge of the respective court of first instance, in the manner provided for in article 101.5 of the Organic Law of the Judiciary. The publication in the BOP of Lugo therefore activates the countdown of this period for the new justice of the peace of Ribadeo.

Appeal and incompatibilities

Interested parties may file an ordinary appeal against the agreement before the General Council of the Judiciary within one month from the day following the publication of the edict. Furthermore, appointed persons who are subject to any incompatibility must choose the position of interest within a period of eight days.

The figure of the justice of the peace exercises proximity jurisdictional functions in civil and criminal matters of lesser entity, in addition to conciliation and civil registry tasks within the municipal scope. Its coverage guarantees the ordinary functioning of the judicial service in the municipality.

Impact for the municipality

The appointment fills a vacancy that directly affected the judicial service of Ribadeo, as the TSXG assumed the designation due to the lack of election by the city council. With the publication in the BOP of Lugo, the new titular justice of the peace has the legal period to take office and begin exercising her functions in the municipality.
