Melillense of the Year 2026 for the rector of the University of Granada

The Governing Council of the Autonomous City of Melilla, in an extraordinary resolution session held on August 26, 2026, agreed to the appointment of Mr. Pedro Mercado Pacheco, Rector Magnificus of the University of Granada, as “Melillense of the Year 2026”. The decision is listed as agreement number 29937/2026 and was made known through the summary of agreements published in the Official Gazette of the Autonomous City of Melilla (BOME) number 6409, dated August 28, 2026, on page 4539.

A recognition of maximum local honor

The distinction of “Melillense of the Year” constitutes one of the highest honors granted by the Autonomous City, and its award to the rector of the University of Granada underscores the links between the Granadan academic institution and the Melillense university community. The agreement was adopted within the framework of the extraordinary session of the Governing Council, which also approved the minutes of the previous session and the official communications presented by the Presidency.

The publication is carried out in compliance with article 22.5 of the Regulations of the Government and Administration of the Autonomous City of Melilla, which provides for the dissemination in the official gazette of the summary of agreements adopted by the governing body.

Processing and signature

The summary of agreements is signed by the Secretary of the Governing Council, María José Gómez Ruiz, appointed by Decree number 0103, dated June 2, 2025 (BOME Extra number 35, dated June 3, 2025). The agreements adopted will be recorded in full in the minutes of the Governing Council, published on the Transparency Portal of the official website of the Autonomous City of Melilla (www.melilla.es), in accordance with article 22.5 of the Regulations of the Government and Administration and article 11.2 h) of the Regulations of Transparency and Access to Public Information of the City (BOME number 5357, dated July 19, 2016).

Scope of the distinction

The appointment of Pedro Mercado Pacheco as “Melillense of the Year 2026” recognizes his trajectory at the helm of the University of Granada, an institution with a consolidated presence in Melilla through its university campus. The distinction affects both the citizens of Melilla and the university community by highlighting the academic cooperation between the city and the Granadan university.

With this agreement, the Governing Council closes the cycle of honorary recognitions for the year 2026, emphasizing the relevance of higher education and its leaders in the public life of the Autonomous City.
