Melide announces 300 euro grants per birth to stabilize population

The Melide City Council announces birth grants for the year 2026, with a maximum amount of 300 euros for each child born or adopted between November 1, 2025, and October 31, 2026. The guidelines were published in the Official Gazette of the Province of A Coruña number 165, on Monday, August 31, 2026, via announcement 2026/5630, signed by Mayor José Manuel Pérez Penas.

The measure, financed through budget allocation 2311/480.00 of the municipal budget, has a total of 15,000 euros for the fiscal year. Its objective is to establish complementary support measures for family units to help stabilize the population and prevent the depopulation of the municipality.

Beneficiary Requirements

Parents registered in Melide who have or adopt a child during the indicated period and meet the conditions established in the guidelines may be beneficiaries:

• Be registered in the municipality at least 6 months prior to the date of birth or adoption.
• Register the born or adopted children in the population register of Melide.
• Commit to remaining registered, both the applicant and the minors, for a period of four years from birth or adoption.
• Effectively reside in any of the parishes of the municipality, a circumstance that the council may verify at any time.

Submission of Applications and Documentation

Applications, completed using the standardized form in Annex I, shall be submitted to the general registry of the council from the day following the publication in the gazette until November 16, 2026. They must be accompanied by the following documentation:

• Certified photocopy of the family book and the applicant’s ID (DNI).
• Copy of the judicial adoption decree, if applicable.
• Sworn declaration of grants requested or received for the same purpose.
• Commitment to remain registered in the municipality for a minimum of four years.
• Certification of bank details and certificates of being up to date with tax obligations to the State Administration, the Autonomous Community of Galicia, and Social Security.

Processing and Financing

The instruction of the procedure is the responsibility of the Councilor for Social Policy and the council’s social workers, while the Evaluation Commission, composed of the Mayor, the Councilor for Social Policy, and the social workers, will submit the grant proposal to the Mayor-President. The resolution will be made by the Local Government Board, following a report from the municipal audit office, with a deadline for resolution ending on December 31, 2026.

The aid is compatible with any other grant for the same purpose from other public bodies. If the expenditure derived from the applications exceeds 15,000 euros, the amount will be distributed equally among all of them, maintaining the individual limit of 300 euros. The Law 38/2003, of November 17, general law on grants, RD 887/2006, of July 21, and the municipal general grant Ordinance number 29 shall apply as supplementary regulations.

The call represents a decisive commitment by the municipality to retain young people and families in a context of rural depopulation, offering direct financial support which, in exchange, requires a commitment to remain for four years. For families registered in Melide, it represents a concrete opportunity to alleviate the costs of birth or adoption and, at the same time, an incentive to settle stably in the municipality.
