Medio Rural prorroga as medidas contra a dermatose nodular bovina

The Department of Rural Affairs maintains the precautionary measures against contagious nodular dermatosis in Galicia until October 31, 2026. This is established by the Resolution of September 23, 2026, of the General Directorate of Livestock, Agriculture and Agri-food Industries, published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) no. 185, of September 29, 2026, in its section III. The measures will be in effect from October 1 and extend those that ended on September 30.

The resolution, signed by Silvestre José Balseiros Guinarte, general director of Livestock, Agriculture and Agri-food Industries, extends the measures contemplated in the Resolution of March 25, 2026, published in DOG no. 59, of March 30, 2026, whose effects ended on September 30, 2026. The previous extension was processed under the Resolution of August 25, 2026, published in DOG no. 163, of August 28, 2026.

A viral disease of high diffusibility

Contagious nodular dermatosis is a viral disease of high diffusibility that implies significant losses both in the affected farms and generally in the bovine sector, according to the text of the resolution itself.

The appearance of the disease in European Union countries territorially and commercially close to Spain, as well as its detection in Spanish territory last October in Catalonia, in the province of Girona, and subsequently in Aragon, represented a significant increase in the risk of appearance in Galicia.

Epidemiological evolution and decision

Despite the favorable evolution of the epidemiological situation in Catalonia and Aragon, the measures adopted by these autonomous communities, and the vaccination plan established in certain areas of Spain, the Xunta considers it advisable to maintain the precautionary measures in Galicia after analyzing the current sanitary risk.

The extension will be effective from October 1 to October 31, 2026, both inclusive, and may be extended again by resolution depending on the epidemiological evolution of the disease.

The decision is based on the following regulations:

  • Regulation (EU) 2016/429 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of March 9, 2016, on animal health.
  • Article 8 on sanitary safeguard measures of Law 8/2003, of April 24, on animal health.
  • Article 19 of Decree 223/2022, of December 22, establishing the organic structure of the Department of Rural Affairs.

The resolution does not end the administrative process. An administrative appeal (recurso de alzada) may be filed before the regional minister of Rural Affairs within one month from the day following its publication in the DOG, in accordance with articles 121 and 122 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the common administrative procedure of public administrations.

The extension maintains surveillance over a disease that directly affects the Galician bovine sector, one of the main drivers of the rural economy. The decision continues a precautionary measure that has been renewed since March 2026 and will be reviewed according to the evolution of the disease in Spain.
