Environment authorizes the pet crematorium of El Sotón, in Lena
Por FactBox Admin

The Regional Ministry of Mobility, Environment and Emergency Management of the Principality of Asturias has granted the simplified integrated environmental authorization to the facility intended for the provision of pet crematorium services located in El Sotón, in the municipality of Lena. The resolution is dated October 9, 2026, and is published in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA) no. 214, of November 5, 2026, with the official reference 2026-08833 and file number AAIs-022/25//AUTO/2025/1923.
The announcement is made public “for the purposes provided for in Article 47.3 of the Law of the Principality of Asturias 1/2023, of March 15, on Environmental Quality,” the regulation that mandates the publication of environmental authorization resolutions. The published text does not detail the treatment capacity, the surface area, or the cadastral location of the facility, data which remain in the administrative file.
Air and waste in a single enabling title
The resolution has a double scope. On one hand, “existing sectoral environmental authorizations are adapted”; on the other, “simplified integrated environmental authorization is granted” to the facility.
The announcement itself specifies that the integrated authorization “incorporates the sectoral environmental authorization regarding air and waste.” In other words, the permit unifies the two environmental aspects of the activity into a single title: the atmospheric emissions from the incineration process and the management of the waste it generates.

A sector with several open files
The BOPA has processed other domestic animal crematorium projects in Asturias in recent months. On September 17, 2026 (no. 180), the application for simplified integrated environmental authorization from Crematorio del Principado, S. L. was submitted for public information, for “funeral services and related activities (domestic animal crematorium)”, file AAIs-114/25//AUTO/2025/26888; it was specified there that the facility would have two cremation ovens and a total capacity of less than 50 kg/h.
That same announcement detailed the requirements associated with the activity: authorization as a potentially atmosphere-polluting activity (article 13.2 of Law 34/2007, of November 15) and waste manager authorization (article 33 of Law 7/2022, of April 8), in addition to the simplified environmental impact assessment. In August 2026, the BOPA also published an environmental consultation for a domestic animal crematorium in Gijón, file IA-IA-0071/2026//AUTO/2026/35086.
The permit arrives while the Lena facility is still not executed and with the pet funeral sector expanding in the community. For the residents of El Sotón, the publication establishes the environmental conditions under which the crematorium may operate regarding emissions and waste, and opens the door for anyone to consult the full content of the resolution in the regional registry of environmental authorizations.
