Medical officers union seeks eligibility rule change

The Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation has applied to the Fair Work Commission for consent to alter its eligibility rules, a change that would reshape which salaried medical officers the union may cover. The application, lodged under section 158 of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009, was published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 3 September 2026 as Government Notices Gazette C2026G00587.
The Commission, based at 11 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, has opened a 35-day objection window running from publication of the notice. Any interested organisation registered under the Act, association or person wishing to oppose the alteration must lodge a notice of objection within that period.
The application and how to view it
The application is identified as D2026/3 and has been published on the Commission’s website at www.fwc.gov.au, under “Registered Organisations”, in the section “Notices in the Gazette and other publications”. A copy of the application and any related documents can also be obtained on request from the Commission.
Requests and objections should be marked to the attention of the Registered Organisations Services Branch and sent by email to regorgs@fwc.gov.au or by post to GPO Box 1994, Melbourne VIC 3001.
Objection requirements and deadlines
A notice of objection must comply with the requirements of regulation 14 of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Regulations 2009. Once lodged, a copy of the notice must be served on the federation within seven days.

The notice is published pursuant to regulation 122 of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Regulations 2009, and is signed by Murray Furlong, General Manager of the Fair Work Commission.
What the change means
Altering an eligibility rule determines which employees a registered organisation is entitled to represent, so the outcome of this application will affect union coverage for salaried medical officers across Australia. The 35-day objection period gives rival unions, employers and other interested parties a formal opportunity to contest the proposed scope of the federation’s coverage before the Commission decides whether to grant consent.
