The Higher Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes) has granted the National Sports Awards for the year 2025, a list of thirteen distinctions led by rider Marc Márquez Alentá with the King Felipe Award. The ruling was approved by the president of the organization, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, and published in the Official State Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado) no. 265, of October 26, 2026, via the Resolution of October 16, 2026 (reference BOE-A-2026-22423).
The resolution is issued by virtue of the call approved by the Resolution of June 25, 2026, from the Presidency of the Higher Sports Council, published in the Official State Gazette no. 175, of July 20, 2026 (reference BOE-A-2026-15825). That call set the deadline for submitting proposals until 11:59 PM on September 1, 2026, and entrusted the study of the candidacies to a Jury appointed by the president of the CSD, which met on October 15, 2026; its minutes now support the published ruling.
The text recalls that the presentation of the awards will be held solemnly in a public act that, “if possible, will be presided over by Their Majesties the King and Queen,” and that the awarded individuals, institutions, or entities will receive an accrediting diploma and a replica of the trophy of the category in which they were chosen.
A list of thirteen distinctions
The Jury’s ruling distributes the awards among individual athletes, local entities, universities, and sports promotion programs:
- King Felipe Award: Marc Márquez Alentá, to the Spanish athlete who most distinguished themselves in their national and international sporting performance.
- Queen Letizia Award: Iris Tió Casas.
- Princess Leonor Award: Anastasiya Dmytriv, as the athlete under 18 with the greatest progression.
- Infanta Sofía Award: the “Paralympic Relay” (Relevo Paralímpico) program, for its work in inclusive and paralympic sports.
- King Juan Carlos Award: Paula Ostiz Taco, as the revelation of the sporting scene.
- Queen Sofía Award: Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas Moreno, for nobility or fair play.
- Ibero-American Community Trophy: Leyanis Pérez Hernández.
- European Union Trophy: Armand Gustav Duplantis.
- Barón de Güell Cup: the Men’s Water Polo National Team.
- Stadium Cup: Convive Fundación Cepaim, for the promotion of grassroots sports.
- Higher Sports Council Award: the City Council of Torrevieja, as a local entity outstanding in the promotion of physical activity.
- Joaquín Blume Trophy: the “Dual Career: one university, the entire territory” program of the University of Castilla-La Mancha.
- National Award for Arts and Sciences Applied to Sport: Fructuoso López Gómez.
- Francisco Fernández Ochoa National Award: Carlos Soria Fontán, for a lifelong trajectory dedicated to sport.
Márquez returns to the winners’ list eleven years later
The recognition of Marc Márquez Alentá is not unprecedented: the rider already obtained the King Felipe Award in the edition corresponding to 2014, according to the Resolution of July 13, 2015, of the Presidency of the Higher Sports Council (reference BOE-A-2015-8416), in which he shared the honors with Carolina Marín Martín and Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro, among others.
In this edition, the career achievement award, the Francisco Fernández Ochoa, goes to Carlos Soria Fontán, while the applied arts and sciences category distinguishes Fructuoso López Gómez. The resolution describes each category with its purpose: from the sporting revelation to the contribution to the eradication of violence in sport, which corresponds to the Queen Sofía Award.
From candidacy to the Jury’s ruling
The 2026 call for entries opened participation to federated athletes, sports associations, national and regional federations, private entities and institutions, previous award winners, and any body of the Public Administrations. Proposals had to be addressed to the secretary of the Jury, accompanied by documentation accrediting the merits, and could be submitted at the General Registry of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports (calle Los Madrazo, 17, 28014 Madrid) or electronically through the CSD headquarters.
The Jury, chaired by the head of the Higher Sports Council, could also propose candidacies up to one week before the meeting in which the awards were decided, and the Ibero-American Community and European Union Trophies could have a specific jury. The minutes of the session on October 15, 2026, are the basis for the ruling that is now being made public.
The winners’ list arrives with the sporting season already well underway and recognizes both individual milestones and institutional and grassroots work: a city council, a foundation, a university, and a paralympic program appear alongside the proper names of Spanish and international sport. The publication in the BOE makes the ruling an official reference and opens the way to the solemn delivery of diplomas and trophies.
