Mérida hybridizes two solar plants with storage batteries

The General Directorate of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Ministry of Industry, Energy, Science and Territory of the Regional Government of Extremadura has opened for public consultation the request to modify the prior administrative authorization of two photovoltaic plants in Mérida (Badajoz) to incorporate electrochemical storage modules using batteries. The announcements, signed on August 5 and 6, 2026, are published in the Official Gazette of Extremadura (DOE) number 159, dated August 18, 2026, and open a period of 30 business days for the submission of allegations.

Two battery hybridization projects

The first corresponds to the photovoltaic installation MER3 (file GE-M/76/20), whose storage module, named BESS MER3, has a material execution budget of €3,404,936.49. The second affects the Parque 1 plant (file GE-M/72/20), with the BESS Parque 1 module and a budget of €4,646,676.77. In both cases, the applicant is the company Bloggers Energías Renovables, SL, located at calle General Castaños 13 in Madrid.

• MER3: installed storage capacity of 6,390 kW, 5 battery containers, total capacity of 25,075 kWh, and a charge/discharge time of 4 hours.
• Parque 1: installed capacity of 8,946 kW, 7 battery containers, total capacity of 35,105 kWh, and a charge/discharge time of 4 hours.
• Both installations only allow for the accumulation of part of the energy generated by the photovoltaic plant itself.

Background and regulatory framework

The plants already had prior administrative and construction authorizations granted by the General Directorate of Industry, Energy and Mines in 2022, and received the operating authorization in favor of Bloggers Energías Renovables in May 2025. The modification requests were registered in April 2026, submitted by Mr. Hugo Álvarez López (MER3) and Mr. Alfredo Fernández Agras (Parque 1).

The procedure is processed under Law 24/2013, of December 26, on the Electricity Sector, and Article 125 of Royal Decree 1955/2000, of December 1, which regulates the authorization procedures for electrical installations. The modifications include the expansion of the existing disconnecting centers with a new line cell to connect each battery module.

How to consult and object

The documentation can be examined at the offices of the General Directorate of Industry, Energy and Mines, at Paseo de Roma s/n, module D, 1st floor, Mérida, from 8:00 to 15:00 hours, and can also be consulted through the Ministry’s public information website. Allegations must be addressed to the aforementioned body within a period of 30 business days starting from the day following the publication of the announcements.

Relevance for the region

The hybridization of the Mérida solar plants with electrochemical storage reinforces Extremadura’s renewable storage capacity, allowing part of the generated energy to be accumulated for later use and improving grid management. The resolution of these files, once the objections process is completed, will consolidate the region as a benchmark in the deployment of storage systems associated with photovoltaic generation.
