Por FactBox Admin

The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) has announced its intention to award the 2027 Basic Field grants that fund civil legal assistance to eligible low-income clients, with grants becoming effective and funds distributed on or about 4 January 2027. The announcement, signed on 28 October 2026 by Stefanie Davis, Deputy General Counsel and Ethics Officer of LSC, is published as a notice in the Federal Register of 2 November 2026 (Vol. 91, No. 210, pp. 68985–68988), under document FR Doc. 2026-22284.
The notice is issued under the authority conferred on LSC by section 1006(a)(1) of the Legal Services Corporation Act, 42 U.S.C. 2996e(a)(1), and pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 2996f(f). It follows LSC’s Notice of Funding Availability published at 91 FR 11578 on 10 March 2026 and an application process that opened on 13 April 2026. The amounts published are annualized estimates built on the 2026 grant awards, not final obligations.

Migrant, Native American and multi-state service areas
Beyond the general state-wide areas, the listing includes separate service areas for migrant and agricultural worker populations (coded with an “M” prefix, such as MCO in Colorado or MFL in Florida) and for Native American populations (coded with an “N” prefix, such as NAK–1 in Alaska or NNM–4 in New Mexico). Some organizations appear repeatedly because they hold several of these areas: Colorado Legal Services is listed for CO–6 ($5,809,144), MCO ($308,952) and NCO–1 ($139,238), while DNA-Peoples Legal Services, Inc. appears for Arizona’s AZ–2 ($587,928) and NAZ–5 ($3,783,315) and for New Mexico’s NM–1 ($273,581) and NNM–2 ($32,940). Cross-border arrangements also show up, as Maryland Legal Aid is listed for Delaware’s MDE area ($32,438) and Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, Inc. for North Dakota’s MND ($139,063).
The notice states that grant awards are made to ensure civil legal services are provided in every service area, although no listed organization is guaranteed an award.
Estimates, comment period and where to write
The funding figures are estimates based on the 2026 awards and may change depending on the final 2027 appropriation. Population estimates for Agricultural Worker service areas are also subject to review by the U.S. Department of Labor and to comments LSC receives during the 30-day comment period. Updates will be posted on LSC’s Basic Field Grant awards page.
Comments and recommendations concerning potential grantees must be received on or before the close of business on 2 December 2026, or within 30 days of publication. They should be sent to Basic Field Grant Awards, Legal Services Corporation, 1825 I St. NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20006. The contact is Christine Williams, Program Manager for Basic Field Competition, Office of Program Performance, at (202) 295–1602 or williamsc@lsc.gov.
Why it matters
The Basic Field programme is the main channel through which federal money reaches local legal aid offices, so this listing effectively maps who will handle eviction, benefits, family and consumer cases for low-income residents in each service area from January 2027. Because the figures are tied to the final 2027 appropriation, the amounts, and potentially the slate itself, remain open to change until the comment window closes on 2 December 2026.
