Por FactBox Admin

An energy storage facility with a capacity of 375 megawatts may be constructed and operated within the territory of the city of Aubange. Individual authorization EP-2025-0122-A was granted by ministerial decree on September 10, 2026, to SA ESTOR-LUX III and published in the Belgian Official Gazette on October 13, 2026, page 54791, under reference C − 2026/007444.

A wave of storage authorizations
The Aubange project is part of a series of comparable decisions signed on September 10, 2026, and published the previous day, October 12, 2026, in the same official journal. These acts concern storage facilities distributed across the entire territory:
- MVA-Project Co. 4: 200 megawatts in Courcelles (EP-2026-0132-A)
- TotalEnergies Electricité et Gaz France: 100 megawatts and 400 megawatt-hours in Kallo, municipality of Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht (EP-2025-0115-A)
- Dispatch Moonstone: 300 megawatts in Lillo, city of Antwerp (EP-2026-0129-A)
- Storm 100: 170 megawatts in Kluisbergen (EP-2026-0134-A)
- MVA-Project Co. 1: 120 megawatts in Sint-Niklaas (EP-2026-0131-A)
The series began earlier in the summer: a ministerial decree of July 17, 2026, published on July 31, 2026, had already authorized Eneco Wind Belgium to establish a 200-megawatt storage facility (EP-2025-0126-A). With 375 megawatts, the Aubange project ranks at the top of this wave, ahead of the 300-megawatt Antwerp facility.
Appeal before the Council of State
In accordance with the coordinated laws on the Council of State, an appeal may be lodged within sixty days following the publication of the decree. The petition must be sent by registered mail to the Council of State, rue de la Science 33, 1040 Brussels. The deadline runs from October 13, 2026, the date of publication in the Belgian Official Gazette.
For local residents and interested parties, this means of appeal constitutes the only procedure explicitly provided for by the published text. No public inquiry or additional consultation is announced in the notice.
Scope of the decision
The authorization confirms the acceleration of the deployment of large-scale electricity storage in Belgium, driven by dedicated companies and established energy players. For Aubange, a municipality bordering Luxembourg and France, it paves the way for a 375-megawatt facility, one of the largest storage capacities authorized to date in the country. Potential opponents have until mid-December 2026 to refer the matter to the Council of State.
